unlike what his kind- and, in honesty, a bit bumbling- personality may imply, agate takes his position as priest with the utmost seriousness. while not known for his cleverness, agate’s big heart and devotion to his deity are all he needs to accrue a favorable reputation within the keep. or, by all means, any dragon at all; this pearlcatcher has a tendency to grow on even the most antisocial of dragons. such was the case with his partner, morel. it’s a near mystery how the pair seem to synchronize so effectively, as their respective outgoing extrovert and quiet introvert ways so obviously contrast. what they do share is a surprising lack of social skill. agate, while being a remarkably friendly dragons, struggles with detecting even the most visible of subtleties in his interactions. off-handed quips or implied meanings often go straight over his head, however polite he may be to make up for it. priesthood is a job that clashes almost entirely with the sunniness agate sustains. this much is evident, even to him: as he explains often, however, it’s a career that chose him rather than vice versa. agate has always retained a certain level of oracle ability, written off at first blush in hatchlinghood as a plainly overactive imagination. (unsurprising, really, given the variety and prevalence of artists residing between songbird keep’s borders.) it’s been proven since, by now, but as with most magic it possesses a particular catch. a connection to the earthshaker of any kind is valuable, agate knows, but the information his prophetic sight offers up is far more trivial than actually useful. agate is just blessed enough with the talent to gain nigh comically faint visions of the future- the very most that the pearlcatcher is capable of determining doesn’t stray much farther than knowing what antiope might eat for lunch the next day. every once in a while, it comes in handy; quail will forget where she left her latest lyric sheet, for example, and the earthshaker might be kind enough to give agate a vision of where she set it down. (her mate buckwheat’s nest, of course, just the same as always) but, predominantly, they’re frivolous little details that don’t contribute much to the grand scheme of clan life. there’s certainly no grand prophecies that have found their way into the keep. nevertheless, it doesn’t bother agate much. he’s terribly pleased to have such a link to his deity at all, however slim. such fondness fuels his steadfast dedication to the keep’s earthshaker shrine, which he circles by each day to utter a prayer and drop off a few offerings. these depend entirely on what his clanmates donate, so the daily gift can range anywhere from a bushel of fresh berries gathered by chrysanthemum, to a small painting courtesy of sempervivum. it’s simple work that agate takes considerable pride in. |
