Gather round, my darlings, and listen well.. As I tell you the tale of the Pirate King. Oh what a scoundrel that dragon was, always off in the stars searching for adventure and coming back with hoards of treasure. Their ship was made of the sturdiest wood and bound by magic, laden with gold as it was. They traveled alone, never taking on a crew, but never lonely.
And then it changed, and then they saw an angel, a single ray of light like a star but so much warmer. She glowed with all the magnificence of a sunrise, the colors of the sky etched into the scales she chose to wear. They were a poor fool in love from the moment they saw her. But how could an angel ever love a simple thief? What could they ever hope to do to win the heart of such magnificence, older than time and infinitely more beautiful? They couldn't know, but they were a stubborn fool, never one to back from a challenge, so they sought to try.
And try they did, showering their angel in golden rings, and jewels, and all the finest treasures of the earthly world. And every time, met with a small giggle and a thanks, but never more than that. They grew disheartened, saddened by their failure. The gifts slowed but never stopped. They went on more adventures, but never forget the aching gap in their heart and always turned to their star during a long journey, to never forget the memories of home, wrapped in the arms of pure light.
But mortal lives are short, such is the curse of the word. A single lifetime passes in the blink of an eye for anything that does not know of time and the hardships it brings. And the Pirate King grew older, as all dragons must. But they did not make it to their dying days, their scales pierced through by a sharp spear, their adventures coming to an end with the song of hardened steel.
But when they opened their eyes, they found themselves amongst the stars, their home as it had always been. They looked at their paws, now made of a gently glowing light. They did not know what they were. So they asked. And a voice that did not exist answered them.
"You are Janus, the angel of the crossroads, of any path that diverges, and of the time before a choice is made."
Janus found their angel again. A beautiful creature and she danced across the skies with them in tow, together their light creating beautiful trails across the arctic skies. Janus learned that she was an angel of light, of life, and of every new beginning. And together, they were whole. The choice and the decision, a bond born of love and living everlasting in the stars. You can see them sometimes, little ones, if you look up to the skies on a clear cold night. The echo of a ship that sailed the stars, her captain and her angel, all together at last.
