The Ringleader

The Dam is a very large place. The bottom floor alone is the size of a small town. Shops, meeting halls, barracks, food stores, kitchens... All are right there. The second floor, too, is full of things... Mostly nestrooms, but there's enough space for more dragons up there than you'd ever imagine would fit in one building.
So why is it that the third floor is entirely reserved? It's huge. What exactly would take up so much space?

It's curious.
You're curious.
The stairs lead you up and up, and music starts to filter through the thick wood. A clashing mix of tinny, festive tunes and the ear-splitting humming of Coatls and not coatls singing in their native tongue.
It gets louder and louder as you climb, until you reach the top, and the room unfolds before you.

You now understand why the floor is reserved.
Before you lays an entire circus; tents, trapezes and all. Banners hang on the walls, pennants flutter in a magicial breeze, and the high wooden ceiling has been painted in the deep blue of a summer sky, so convincing you think for a minute you've stepped through a portal to the realms of the Lightweaver. Somehow, in the heart of the darkest lands in all of Sornieth, you've walked straight into the most vibrant, colourful place you've ever seen.

Your claws creak under the wood, and suddenly the music, the breeze, everything stops, as if frozen in time.
A coatl head peeks out of a tent opening. Another. Five. Ten. Fifteen. Coatls, guardians, spirals, tundras. Jesters, bards, performers, seers.
They all watch you, and one by one, all smile at your approach.

"Welcome, Welcome!"
A pair of coatls, one green and one blue, appear out of nowhere before you, their paws outstretched and their humming voices in perfect sync.
"You're the first visitor we've had today!"
"Are you new?"
"You look new."
"Why don't we show you around?"

They grab your arms, the music starts back up, and suddenly you're being pulled straight into the heart of the festivities.

"You'll have a marvellous time, you'll see."
"Everybody loves the Sundown Troupe!"

Puck and Ainsel are the inseperable, inescapable twins who lead the Sundown Troupe; a large, travelling circus and bardic group made up mostly of coatls. They're never apart, and are so in sync they often finish -and start- one another's sentences, worlds rolling together as if they know each other's minds exactly.

Puck is the calmer of the two, for what that's worth. He's still louder than a guardian and more stubborn than a snapper, but he has a slightly gentler way with his words.

He's incredibly charismatic and incredibly joyful, enough that he can make anyone smile with enough time... He even managed to make the matriarch amused, which was a minor miracle in itself, considering how neutral faes can be.

He gets on well with just about everyone, though sometimes his enthusiasm is not as genuine as it could be... The arcane warriors in the barracks and Penumbra especially tend to ruffle his feathers. They concern him greatly for reasons he is not sure of... But he would never show or say such a thing, certainly not. He's a dragon of goodwill and gratitude, and they protect the dam which has become his troupe's semi-permanent base, and Penumbra is the son of the matriarch, though he's not sure how she raised such an... upsetting child.

How the Sundown Troupe came to live in the dam is an interesting story indeed, and one that serves of a warning to the rest of the dam, to always make sure you know what you're agreeing to when you make bargains and promises.

Once, when the Dam was still a very small place, only just starting in it's growth to become the hub of activity it is now, two travelling Coatls arrived. They said their names were Winter and Sky, and that they wished to stay for a while. They said that they were a travelling troupe of bards and performers, who journeyed vast distances to bring joy to others. They were good guests, and very gracious, and when they asked if they could return, Cirrus said to them this:

"You and your troupe are welcome to stay as long as you like, as long as you stay within our rules."

This pleased the pair greatly, and they thanked the clan immensely for their kind offer.

They stayed a week, a month, a year, filling the halls with their happy, ear-paining coatl songs. It was irritating at times, but Cirrus and Kalen accepted that they had made this offer, and couldn't revoke it now.

Only on the second day of the second year did they realise what they had gotten into.
This was when they found walking up the path the largest group of dragons they had seen, with wagons and carts and guards alike. Not even trading caravans were this large.

They got to the front gate, and Winter and Sky ran to greet them.
"Here is our troupe!" They said to the matriarch. "Now, where shall we set up our tents?"

Cirrus took Kalen aside.
"No." She said to him.

"We did promise them this." He replied. "We should have known two does not constitute an entire troupe."

"No." She insisted.

"We just finished making the third floor. It
is empty, and the hatchlings would enjoy the fun."

"...No." She repeated. "I don't want to fill this place with circus performers. What good would that do?"

"...I like circuses." Said Kalen. "They're fun. My father used to be in a circus."

"Really." Said Cirrus.

"...Please, can't we let them stay?"

"...Fine."

And with that, the deal was agreed.
It's hard to tell if the matriarch ever regretted this choice... The music and lights and colours were overwhelming to some, but to others enticing, and it was hard to say whether or not they gained more or less interest because of their new attraction.

For the troupe, however, things were good. A permanent place to stay, safe from the elements and the beastclans and the dragons who did not like them. A cut of their profits went back to the dam, but they made enough profits with the constant travellers here that it didn't matter.
