**written for a write-lore-to-adopt forum thread

Despite the sun's absence, heat clung to the air, interlacing the night with a lethargic spell . The mere thought of moving around was abhorrent. It was for this particular reason that a pair of friends chose to sprawl out on a field and rest. The faun leaned his head against one of the dragon's large forelimbs, fingers idly plucking grass as he hummed. The faun's smallness was so greatly emphasised he could be mistaken for the dragon's toy doll.

“You know, Technically speaking, you’re my familiar.”

Farlis snorted, gaze shifting away from the fireflies hovering over the field in favour of smiling down at the faun. "Oh? Please explain.”

A sensible creature would hear alarm bells screaming in their mind at the sight of jagged teeth peeking out of a parted maw. But not basil. He just grinned back. This faun, with grass sticking out of unruly hair, and only his fur and skin as protection, met farlis's gaze without an inkling of trepidation. Something a rare few succeeded at.

“Well, firstly- in a way- I was the one that summoned you. secondly- To quote your exact words- when we met you said, ‘I am here to grant your wish.’ ” His voice momentarily deepened, mimicking farlis's rumbling tone, then returned to its normal pitch. “Which sounds like something a familiar would say.”

Farlis narrowed his eyes, smirking.
“I’m surprised you remembered. As I recall it you were quivering with fright, stumbling over your words and blathering about stars.”

“I was not!” Basil reached behind him to smack the dragon's arm. Laughter rolled out of Farlis like a booming thundercloud, amusement radiating off of him as his friend crossed his arms and pouted. "Okay. fine. Maybe i was a little scared but i thought you were going to eat me.”

“You’re too bony. I'd wait for you to fatten up first.”

“aha! I knew you had a hidden agenda. I’m just a snack to you aren't I?” he sniffed disdainfully and turned away, hiding an amused smile. On the other hand, farlis's grin was as sharp as the crescent moon in the sky. “well, If that's how you see me, guess i’ll lea...”

"What?" Farlis lowered his head to be at eye level to the faun, concerned by his silence. Thoughtlessly , basil waved his hand out, flicking the dragon's jaw.

"Shh," his other hand was lifted to his lips. Above them was a beautiful display of stars streaking across the sky. There had to be millions of them, all leaping from one end of the world to the other, racing each other to the horizon, tails leaving splashes of colour. The beauty of it was lost on Farlis

Rather than feel miffed, the dragon acquiesced with a sigh, laying his head down on the grass. Eventually he began to doze.

--

Basil tapped the dragon's face, fingertips resting on scales as smooth as silk. Farlis stirred, left wing twitching and tail swishing to the side, but he remained in a slumber.

"hey, Farlis?"

"hmmm?"

"Are those dragons too?"

Farlis opened an eye, a pool of magenta observing the faun with warmth. "Yes, in a way, some are." He yawned, "but others take on different forms."

"Oh. Then do you know who those are?" Basil gestured at the lights flicking across the sky.

"That-" another yawn."- That one is called twig. And the one there is his sister, branch."

"..Really?"

"No. Do you know the name of every faun that exists?"

"Of course not."

Farlis chuckled. " Likewise. Although I don't know many of my kind, I do know of a wishing star that fell in love with a knight. Would you like to hear it?"

"Yes!"

And that would be how their night would play out. Uninterested in the affairs of stars, Farlis would nap as soon as his tale concluded. Basil would gaze back at the sky, mesmerised. Maybe a question or two would be spoken and Farlis would drawl out an answer but a comfortable silence always flowed back.

---
As Basil, humming softly, peered at those bright dots of light hurtling by, he wondered how many more souls would have their wishes turn true tonight. He considered himself the lucky few who had made a wish on a night like this and had it granted. Smiling, he glanced at Farlis. his dearest friend;his wishing star.

"You made me a scarf."
"Yes."
"But I dont need one, I barely notice the cold."
"Oh.. right.. that was silly of me..well.. I.. I could take it back?"
"I didnt say I didn't want it. The gift is lovely, thank you. "
It wasn't something farlis ever considered wearing but he'd do anything to keep his friend smiling as brightly as he was in that moment.
