Henry Collins
Second Master of HMS Erebus

His full name was Henry Foster Collins, eldest son of Henry Collins and Georgina Foster. He had 5 siblings - 2 brothers and 3 sisters. As for Collins’ age - his parents got together “in the early part of the peace”, (so 1815 would be the earliest they could’ve married). If that is the case, Collins would’ve been no older than 30 at the start of the Franklin Expedition.

His father was a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, moving up through basically the same line of promotions that Collins later would. He was apparently of the act-first-think-later sort, being noted for his “hazardous intrepidity”. He served during the War of 1812, and was serving as Coast Guard when the Franklin Expedition set sail. He was likely periodically active throughout his children’s lives.

Collins comes from a family with a long history in the Royal Navy. His grandfather George Collins was the Clerk of the Cheque (dealt with payroll) at Priddy’s Hard, an ordnance depot for the Army and Navy, and held the title of esquire, a social rank of the gentry above that of gentleman, but below knight. His great grandfather Captain Greenville Collins was a Royal Navy hydrographer to King William III.

Henry Collins was the second master on HMS Erebus during the Franklin expedition.
