When Viper was born in a nest of three, he and his siblings were already very sick, afflicted with some unknown disease. His siblings quickly lost their lives, and Viper was slated to follow them very soon. The other dragons nesting at the time kept their hatchlings away from May and Stanton's so they wouldn't catch the illness themselves or spread it to their own hatchlings.

However, one day, the young Blaze crawled over from his own nest regardless of the danger and his own parents' panicked cries, and he lay with Viper, warming him with his fur. Somehow, this calmed the infant Guardian and allowed him to sleep when nothing else would, and he began to recover in the soft Tundra's company.

Viper was the only survivor from his nest, and his parents couldn't keep these two hatchlings apart once the young Guardian recovered. Viper didn't remember much about his time being sick, but he felt like he owed Blaze for saving his life. This wasn't a conscious thought for him, but regardless he dedicated himself wholly to the Tundra. Blaze, too, had no memory of reaching out, but he was thankful for having such a strong friendship so early in his life.

Viper protected Blaze from every potential threat, even perhaps to a fault. However, he was unable to save Blaze when he was taken advantage of by a dangerous relative. Once Viper learned of what had happened, he didn't understand fully due to his age, but all he knew was that Blaze was hurt - he attacked the abuser. Viper was much too young, and the damage was already done. He sustained injuries from the battle and began to lose to the adult Pearlcatcher, but another older dragon from the Light lair discovered what was happening, stepped in, and incapacitated the aggressor before he could destroy the young Guardian.

The Light lair and the Lightning lair were already close in bond, and the two communities frequently intermingled and knew of each other's business. Viper and Blaze and their families had visited before, many times. The Light lair attempted to hold onto philosophies of peace and tranquility, at least among dragonkind - so when the Lightning clan learned of the crime Blaze's relative had committed, they agreed to take the task of carrying out the trial and executing him.

Things got a lot more difficult for the two families after that. Eventually, Viper and Blaze split from the Light lair and their families to move to the Canyon, surrounded by soldiers. Viper struggled with his inability to protect Blaze in the past, so he wished to learn from them. Viper convinced Blaze to join him, knowing he could never have left his charge behind, a fact he goes to great lengths to keep secret from the red Tundra. Viper's parents were sad to see him go as well, but understood that both boys needed the change of scenery, and ultimately, that the two would grow on their travels.

Although the Canyon was home to many dragons, all of whom had no shortage of strife in their pasts, the militant and strict nature of it's societies would prevent anything like Blaze's uncle from happening again.

The matriarch took them in quickly, and they soon became part of the family and made their homes here. To this day, the two can always be seen together, and Viper continues attempting to help Blaze and bring him up in spite of his past - But who knows if he'll ever reveal the depths of his affections?
