Xol was raised by two loving parents from the moment he hatched from his egg. The young hatchling knew nothing of the horrors that would one day await him and his family. For most of his young life, he played with his brother and sister beneath the dark pines of Shadow where their brilliant icy scales stood out in stark contrast to their dark birthplace.

While out playing near the swampy border with the Water flight, the three hatchlings would be spotted by mercenaries looking for their next targets. Xol tried to flee with his siblings while their mother fought tooth and claw to defend them. Outnumbered, the wildclaw could only watch as he and his two nest-mates were stolen away. It was the last he'd ever see of his mother and it wouldn't be long before he lost his brother and sister as well. Scared and uncertain what would be done with them, Xol hoped his family would one day find them.

It seemed the day would never come. First, his brother Sothis disappeared—escaping while the pirates were in the Earth flight searching for more treasure to bring with them. He'd tried getting Xol and their sister out but was forced to flee before it could happen. Xol often heard the group fighting over letting one of their cargo get away. After that, security around them tightened. Any stops they made were scarce as they continued on their journey. Xol could only find comfort in his sister, who remained determined to get the both of them out.

When they reached the Ice flight, they finally understood why they were taken. Xol was still a young dragon but could understand, even without hearing the conversation between the crazed scientist and mercenaries, that they'd been the unlucky ones grabbed for deities knew what experiments. During the transfer, the young imperial did his best to escape. He fought as fiercely as his mother had but lacked the experience and was subdued shortly after the initial chaos. Despite being restrained in cold chains that weighed him down, Xol was relieved to see his sister had managed to get away. He never saw her again.

For years afterward Xol was subject to many horrors and painful experiments. Lore of emperor dragons was something he'd once only thought to be scary stories told by his father. However, he was quick to learn those monstrosities were in fact real and the scientists were using him to achieve something that had never been done: creating an emperor that wasn't undead. He didn't know how many dragons suffered and failed before him nor how many suffered in order to get the pieces needed. But it sickened him as he felt his body change. Extra wings were fused on through magic only to be restrained like his original pair. As more modifications came, his mane turned to a darker color of whatever dragon's genes had been spliced into his own body.

The toll on his body was great. Xol sometimes thought he'd die from the agony of it all. But he didn't give up and one day his captors learned their mistake. The restraints snapped as the half-emperor lunged free. Enraged, he made sure to destroy the dragons who'd scarred him and their facility during his escape. The utter power he now had startled him in the aftermath of the destruction. It was nowhere near the level that a true emperor held but it was still unnatural for most imperial.

Xol retreated back to Shadow, hoping against everything to reunite with his family. But they and his birth clan were long gone. Weak, he eventually collapsed near the border with Plague where he was found by Riesling and taken to the Sect of Masks. Grateful for their aid, the imperial decided to cautiously trust them. With the vampiric skydancer's help, he soon grew to trust his new clanmates and took on the role of warrior. It was fitting for a dragon with such strength and unnatural power, though most of the time he keeps his second pair of wings restrained and out of the way. Riesling would eventually become his mate as well, although he worries for her each time she's sent out on her own duties as a messenger.
