Memento Mori
Generation 3

button_by_cas_a_fras-dclednr.png

Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

It was dark, cold as he lay there. Cursed, they called him. Cursed, they were right. He waited in the darkness. He always knew this day would come, for he was one of the cursed ones. Death, a second chance he contemplated as he waited. Scared, yet certain he'd get his chance.

Then he heard a soft singing.

Vērum est an timidōs fābula dēcipit
umbrās corporibus vīvere conditīs,
*** coniūnx oculīs imposuit manum
suprēmusque diēs sōlibus obstitit
et trīstis cinerēs urna coercuit,
Nōn prōdest animam trādere fūnerī,
sed restat miserīs vīvere longius?
An tōtī morimur nūllaque pars manet
nostrī, *** profugō spīritus hālitū
Immixtus nebulīs cessit in āerā
et nūdum tetigit subdita fax latus?

Quidquid sōl oriēns, quidquid et occidēns
nōvit, caeruleīs Ōceanus fretīs
quidquid bis veniēns et fugiēns lavat,
aetās Pēgaseō corripiet gradū.
Quō bis sēna volant sīdera turbine,
quō cursū properat volvere saecula
astrōrum dominus, quō properat modo
oblīquīs Hecatē currere flexibus:
hōc omnēs petimus fāta, nec amplius,
iūrātōs superīs quī tetigit lacūs,
usquam est. Ut calidīs fūmus ab ignibus
vānēscit, spatium per breve sordidus;
ut nūbēs, gravidās quās modo vīdimus,
arctōī Boreae dissicit impetus:
sīc hic, quō regimur, spīritus effluet.

Post mortem nihil est ipsaque mors nihil,
vēlōcis spatiī mēta novissima.
Spem pōnant avidī, sollicitī metum:
Tempus nōs avidum dēvorat et Chaos.
Mors indīvidua est, noxia corporī
nec parcēns animae. Taenara et asperō
rēgnum sub dominō līmen et obsidēns
custōs nōn facilī Cerberus ōstiō
rūmōrēs vacuī verbaque inānia
et pār sollicitō fābula somniō.
Quaeris quō iaceās post obitum locō?
Quō nōn nāta iacent.

The soft singing became louder as something approached. Devoveo struggled to look around turning is aching next as hid body was unmoving. He saw nothing but the occasional speck of light.

Suddenly he felt a weight on his chest. When he looked there was nothing there. The same voice that had been singing asked from above.

"Do you... wish to live?"

"Yes," answered Devoveo almost hesitantly.

"Then do me a favor... and it will be so. Do you accept?"

"I-I accept your terms."

Suddenly, he could see the creature sitting on his chest. A glowing blue deer with wings. The type of creature he'd only heard about in fairy tales and from mischievous shadow dragons, a Wispwillow Peryton.

"I wish to be seen... by everyone."

Very few can see a Wispwillow Peryton he thought. It will be no easy task, but he knew he must hold up his end of the deal for the fear she'll resend hers.

"Brevis ipsa vita est sed malis fit longior. Let's go."

Cursed? More like Blessed he thought as he followed her back to life.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.
