Abandoned by gods
... but undying
____________________________
Sabine was originally a monk, serving at a warm, dusty and quiet altar. She worked beneath the council of Earth, but their temple in particular was known for devotion to all that deserved appraisal. Warm smiles and friendly bows accompanied visitors, and Sabine found that it was all she wanted in life. The down to earth living, constantly working to shed yourself of worldly needs, she depended on it.
And it let her down.
One fateful evening, their faith was tested when a large crowd of rowdy, jeering onlookers raided their poor, small altar. Stealing the fruits and offerings, smashing pots and breaking statues, absolutely disrespecting their entire life’s work. The council was mortified. What could have caused such an uproar...?
All council claws pointed to their poor servant Sabine, who was their only scapegoat at the time to use when the mayor of their town questioned what they had done. The mob had dissipated by then. It was only known later when she had been booted out of the temple, cursed and disgraced that the mob had been conjured by a popular imperial at the time. They saw it as silly and a waste of space- they wanted to turn the area into a sporting spot. And they had gotten their lackeys together to do it.

But Sabine didn’t know that.
She fully believed her superiors that in all of her quiet prayers and studies, that SHE was the reason behind her life falling apart. That she was guilty, awful.
And so she left, she ran far away from her little earthy town, covered in mud and clay, she escaped to a desolate island, starving and scared.
She lived there for years, barely, hardly bothering to eat or drink or take care of herself at all. When a sailor eventually discovered her, they had made many rounds around the area, assuming she was just another log. Once they found her though, she was swiftly rescued and taken aboard, much to her dismay.

She told her story and tried to escape once more, but the ship captain at the time, a tall behemoth of a Guardian, quite literally knocked some sense into her by pinning her with his tail and gruffly explaining to her how ridiculous the story really was.
Sabine refused to admit that she wasn’t guilty, but after a year of quietly and sullenly helping out on the lonely sailor’s ship, she slowly warmed up to her chilly companion. She even went so far as to start chats with him on occasion.
Sabine began to rediscover her own self worth, and became the captain’s second in command, helping steer the ship sometimes. Even their icy glare seemed to melt when she was around.
And soon they fell in love.

The captain joined the outcasts, but you likely won’t see him around often. He’s usually out sailing when he can be, bringing back fish for the starving residents. Sabine is quite the loving companion, always seen rubbing up against them and intertwining tails when they’d walk together, albeit hindered by their size difference. She can be shy sometimes, but tries to put her anxiety and deep rooted guilt behind her, making the most of her current life and organizing the mess of a clan when she can.
Knowing how unpredictable her life is, visiting the tall pines she nests in would probably lead to it toppling over with no reason, but if something off didn’t happen, she’d be more than happy to chat over a fish or two. She’s quite fidgety, but she can be a good friend.
Why would you ever want to hurt her?
