[ Lore ]

If you listen, you can hear it- a faint voice, humming softly in the bathhouse. The melodies are haunting, sweet, and never the same; endlessly sang, lilting and beautiful. It's said that the creature that lives there isn't truly alive, that it was created years ago by an alchemist long dead, and that the magic of the city keeps it functioning; standing before it now, you could believe it.

You begin furtively taking notes as you observe it, quill flying across parchment. Alchemy has been considered a more esoteric art- few true homunculi remain, and this one is a fantastic example. It looks lifelike- scales shined to perfection, talons razor-sharp where it clutches the cart it pushes before it. Unlike many of the other creatures self-maintained by feeding on the city's ambient magical energy, this one exhibits no sign of developing anything beyond simple sentience. It's a truly fascinating creature.

It does not flinch as you approach, merely gestures at its cart- full of soaps, incense, herbs, and salts- and waits, continuing to hum quietly. It appears to be made of white marble and pigmented soap, completely solid and somehow waterproof against the steam of the bathhouse. Its eyes are blue glass, glinting against the warm light, and you shiver a bit at the emptiness they hold.

It waits for you to say something, endlessly patient, and you peek further into the cart.

"Lavender, please," you say, and it reaches inside to press a bar of lavender-infused soap into your waiting claws. Job accomplished, it turns away, marble claws clacking against the tile floor; it does not wait for thanks, merely moves to the next bath patron standing across the room. You watch it go, fascinated; it also wordlessly presents its cart to the other patron, and hands them their selection before pushing the cart out of the bathhouse proper, presumably to restock.

Glancing around- no one seems to be watching you- you follow, tucking the bar of soap into one of your pockets. It's humming a different song, still unfamiliar, still beautiful; it does not seem to hear you approach, and you follow it as it moves into what must be the bathhouse storeroom.

You peek inside, and stand rooted to the spot as you watch it work. It carefully picks out soaps and salts from the shelves, stocking its cart; that completed, it turns and begins harvesting dried herbs from the herb racks that take up the far wall, then gently hangs new herbs to dry. It works smoothly, motions almost mechanical, humming all the while. But something seems- off.

Surely a creature with no emotion would not smile as it works- nor bring the herbs to its carved nostrils to savor their scents, and close its eyes as it did so.

You see it begin to wrap up its work and flee quietly, snapping your notebook closed; you have enough notes for today, at least, and you don't want to get caught where you don't belong. You tuck your notebook- and the lavender soap- into your bag and turn to leave. As you cross the threshold, you glance back- the creature is pushing its cart around again, and when you strain your ears, you can hear it-

A different song.
