Sthenno perked up his head, all four eyes wide to the circle of fellow Mirrors which he sat in. To his left, his father also sat, as stoic and silent as ever. His eyes had hardly blinked in the two hours that they had been here, but Sthenno knew that his father was listening closely. Averting his gaze from his father back to the matter-at-hand, an elderly Mirror with a voice like gravel and a spike-filled hide to match was preaching about the inadequacies of the youngest generation. He continued his rant about their worthlessness and indifference to the Plaguebringer. It was then that a younger member of the council spoke up to defend the generation behind her. Words were thrown, a bone was tossed, and Sthenno sighed, lowering his head.

Council meetings were all well and good, but they were dull. The council members were always boring and overly-dramatic. Sthenno had been attending these meetings since he was a hatchling, his father having been trained by his own father many decades prior. However, unlike his father and grandfather, Sthenno had little interest in governing, politics, or controversies. He was a true Mirror, a Plague Mirror at that, and sought the wide fields of the hunt. It was when the argument between the council members before him had begun to take a rather loud turn that Sthenno stood and walked out.

Looking back on the situation, Sthenno never before realized just how important that move would be to the rest of his life. He returned home that night to tell his parents why he was leaving and failed to mention where he was going. He left early the next morning. He traveled west, to the lands of the Arcanist, and came to find himself welcome in a clan of outcasts called Clan Veyan. Despite a welcoming atmosphere, Sthenno had a hard time adjusting at first. This clan allowed for him to partake in hunting and council meetings became a thing of the past. However, there was just something that was missing.

That something missing came in the form of a Coatl called Cornifer. A mysterious bone-collector, Cornifer and Sthenno became fast friends in the Veyan Clan. The otherworldliness of the quiet Coatl spoke to Sthenno in a way that he had never experienced, and soon the two became inseparable. The one exception to this was Sthenno’s many trips hunting. During these times, Sthenno would leave for hours, and sometimes days in search of a good kill for the clan.

Many in the Veyan Clan knew that Sthenno’s long trips away from the lair were not from a lack of hunting skill, but indeed the opposite. Sthenno preferred to ambush his prey, opting to follow and track them for days at a time. When he finally went in for the kill, it was silent and deadly – a throat slit in the dead of night or a spear to the heart before a scream could be made. No matter his upbringing as a Plague dragon, Sthenno always did believe in merciful kills, and refused to let his prey suffer. Dragging the kill home always made for a difficult experience. Sthenno, like many Mirrors, has always been mostly flightless.

Such tiring work always paid off, since the clan remained ever-grateful to him for producing food to eat and hides to use. Sthenno himself even had a little habit of cleaning the bones of his kills as gifts to Cornifer, who often cleaned his hunting clothes in return. Small kills often found their way into Sthenno’s chambers, who would practice taxidermy in his free time. Resident hatchlings always seem to avoid Sthenno’s chambers in fear of the monsters on his wall. What they do not avoid is Sthenno himself. Despite his ghoulish outward appearance and odd interests, Sthenno has always been a compassionate and kind dragon who tells any and all interested hatchlings stories of his many hunts beyond the borders of the Starfall Isles. No matter how many times he tells the same stories, they are always met with interest and a fair amount of awe.

War wounds and old bones, the sparrows and the smouldering embers. A lone trek across an unforgiving plain, wishes denied and forgotten. Magic that sinks into the skin, needle and thread, battered books and feathers stirring in a dry wind. Peppercorns and dark chocolate, heavy eyes and ceremonial armor. The disk of the moon above, the entire world below. Although you kept your wings furled tight, still you dream of an open sky.
