Biography

Candor
Petulant Mage

A large, sinuous Imperial stands over a barren portion of earth, frowning thunderously. He is all angles; though of a formidable size, it is clear that he takes very little care of himself, at least in terms of food and drink. He is impeccably groomed, mane and scales brushed and buffed to a glorious shine, but they look somehow artificial, perhaps oiled or otherwise painted. Only his claws gleam with a vivid, twinkling blue light. He closes his eyes and breathes slowly, concentrating.

The ground before him shakes. It cracks and dips, earth rumbling and groaning as a boulder the size of the Imperial's own head rises out of the center of the once-flat area. For a moment, the boulder shimmers, its shape flickering through seemingly infinite forms -- a rose, a pond with reeds, a perfectly shaped Wildclaw, flick-flick-flick--and then the Imperial opens his eyes, sees what he is creating, and recoils in disgust. The boulder slams to the ground, a misshapen mass, and the Imperial roars his frustration, turning his considerable length and vaulting into the "sky" of the high-ceilinged cavern.

Candor was absolutely, positively, born into the wrong Flight. Or at least, that is what he believes, and believes so firmly that it might as well be truth. He is disgusted by all that Earth stands for; he doesn't believe in attachment to things lost, only to what is current or new, and what is more...Earthlings are dirty. Candor hates living in the depths of Stonehearth, and were it not for his family and in particular, his tutor, he would have left these disgusting tunnelers for a life of adventure and magecraft.

Oh, yes. Candor's all-consuming passion is to become the most powerful mage in all of Sornieth...but a mage who manipulates magic for its own sake, not through a particular element. His disappointment, frustration and wrath at only being able to control Earth--never mind the skill with which he could wield it, should he deign to pay attention to his power--know no bounds, and continue to grow every day that his frantic attempts at studying Arcane magic fail to yield useful results. There are none in the Clan who would willingly call him "friend," as distaste for his surroundings is never even politely masked. He was aptly named, although Valor and Citta never considered what could result--he is truthful to a fault. To all faults associated with being truthful.

Several seasons past, Candor left the lair for almost a full month. Most thought he would never return, and were not-so-secretly pleased...but unfortunately, he would never oblige anyone, even unknowingly. He returned to Stonehearth with a small Spiral in tow, explaining that she was his new mate (and conveniently not giving her the chance to deny it). Her prodigious magical ability was, of course, not important at all...nor her Arcane alignment. Not at all.

Unfortunately, as soon as Edel was settled into their shared Cavern, she fell head over tail for Sable and left Candor high and dry. He is still not over it, and monopolizes as much of her time as his size and temperament grant. He expects her to be his teacher in the reformation of his magic, and refuses to listen to her explanations to the contrary. Whether or not the "mate" idea was a true wish (to heighten his powers through mating, most likely) or just a convenient ruse to draw her to Stonehearth, it is clearly not in the cards. Their relationship is a complicated mess of checks and balances and bartering, with neither side fully satisfied. It is expected by all that one of them will leave the Clan at some point in frustration. They would be sorry to lose Edel, who is a remarkable storyteller, using her magic to create smoke-images in the air for those dragons, hatchling or adult, who have trouble understanding her speech. They would not be sorry to see Candor go, but still, he lingers.

That being said, he must have some good qualities somewhere. Perhaps very deep within himself. It is true that Candor was one of the first children of the Clan, and has not forsaken his Imperial loyalty yet. He threw a gigantic tantrum at being herded underground for the first time, and continues to express his distaste for it...and yet has chosen one of the largest caverns for himself, and is more likely to be found within than without at this point in time.
