The Celestial Healer
written by Harana

Asclepius was once a happy child who came from a family of mixed powerful lineage. He had a good family, one who, like his cousins, Elio and Ascelin, trained their children to use their powers to keep Sornieth safe from the Shade. His father was one of the clan's advisors, one who made the strong boundary around the lair to protect it from rival clans. His mother was a great mage and warrior, who fought with strong vigor and passed her skills onto her children.

Asclepius and his brother were very happy with their life, though they knew that someday, they would have to leave the clan behind and start their own journeys. Until then, however, they spent their days studying and training, playing together with their friends in their off time.

Unfortunately, however, those days ended when one day, Asclepius woke up to the sound of screams. He ran outside and saw the sky darkening and shifting, everything shrouded in darkness. The sounds of shrieking and screaming echoed throughout the lair.

Out of the corner of his eye, the young Pearlcatcher caught sight of the dark fog shifting into a form - a face, a smirk. Laughter echoed throughout the chambers. Asclepius' heart shivered in fear. This was no dragon - the Shade had come for them. For their clan.

Asclepius turned and ran back to the house as fast as he could.

He called for his father and mother, but to no avail. He ran back inside, grabbing his brother and teleporting him to a safe pocket dimension before teleporting back to get anyone else. He knew that there was a low chance of survival, and that there was no chance that even his parents or the clan leader were alive. But it was worth a shot. He would much rather have died saving at least one person than to run away knowing that someone could have been rescued. As he ran out the door, however, he felt powerful magic overcome him; a sleeping spell. As he stumbled and hit the floor, for a moment, he saw a Fae drifting protectively in front of him, facing the Shade.

Everything faded to black.

He woke up to the sound of his brother calling his name. He was on a hospital bed, surrounded by nurses and medics. His brother teleported to a nearby allied clan and asked for help while he was unconscious.

It took one long look at his crying brother for him to realize that their parents, along with all of their clan members, were gone. He and his brothers were the only survivors.

For many years, Asclepius was hateful and bitter towards what occurred to him and his clan. Sometimes he blamed the Shade, other times he blamed himself. It was hard to be around him. Even his brother avoided him at times.

After being in the clan for a while, Asclepius was eventually adopted by the medics who saved his life. They were patient with Asclepius, and slowly nudged him towards the medical field and asking him for assistance in healing their patients. It took some time, but eventually, for the sake of bettering himself, agreed.

Asclepius didn't really identify much with his Nightingale heritage, though he did know some healing spells. However, as he began helping his new parents, he realized that he actually had a knack for diagnosing and administering aid to patients.

Slowly, as he assisted the sick, the injured, the wounded, the spiritually broken, the disabled, and the Shade-touched, he began to heal. He learned things from his patients that his tutors and his parents never taught him. He became calmer and wiser with time.

His parents sometimes took him to the forest with them to search for herbs and medicinal plants. He often brought his brother along as well, and they always brought lots of herbs to bring home to the hospital. They never ran out of herbal medicine to give.

One day, when he was a teenager, he was assisting a patient with a blood transfusion when he heard the sound of his brother yelling and telling everyone to clear the way. He looked outside and caught sight of warriors carrying stretcher beds, heading their way. His heart sunk when he saw a few young hatchlings amongst them. He ran to the door.

"Mother! Father! We need more beds!"

An injured young mother appeared at the gates, begging them to save her clan. She was holding a baby in her arms. When the clan's warrior's arrived, they found the place ravaged, and very few survivors. The clan's leader and many of the dragons were missing. It felt abandoned, almost, but they tried to do what they could and brought the remaining dragons to the hospital to be healed.

Asclepius' brother was one of the warriors that were sent to assist. His fellow warriors didn't understand what had become of them, but he did. He remembered it clearly, since he was the one who brought the clan's warriors to the area. When he told Asclepius, he was pale-faced, his eyes full of fear.

"...Brother...the place looked and felt just like our home after the Shade attacked it... I don't think it's just a coincidence that the anniversary of our clan's massacre was yesterday..."

This worried Asclepius, but he reassured his brother that things would be fine. They would have to look into the matter once the patients were in somewhat better shape to tell the tale.

As he tended to the patients, they became comfortable enough to tell him the story - and it was eerily similar to his interaction with the Shade. Screaming, crying, the sound of evil laughter, feelings of utter dread. But just before being attacked, they saw a dragon standing in between them and the Shade, and the lull of slumber calling them.

Asclepius was reminded of the mysterious fae who rescued him from the Shade years ago. He always wondered who that was. He knew one thing for sure - it was a fae. A white fae.

This urged him to dive more into his studies and realize his calling as a healer. His newfound mission to help others, stop the Shade, and maybe figure out who that fae was, pushed him during his last few years in the clan.

Eventually, once he became of age, Asclepius bid his family goodbye and set out on a journey to find a clan to stay in. He ended up in the Sea of a Thousand Currents. He took shelter in a nice hotel in the Tsunami Flats. While he was eating his dinner in a small restaurant, he felt a familiar presence. He took note of a handsome Skydancer and a mysterious fae walking in to order a dish or two. He recognized them immediately.

Initially, he was a bit hesitant to come up and introduce himself. Luckily, he didn't need to, as the two dragons were quick to approach him.

"Greetings, cousin! I didn't think I'd find another one of us here." The fae gave him a surprisingly friendly smile, in spite of his spooky appearance. The Skydancer laughed heartily at Asclepius' perplexed expression.

"Worry not, cousin! Ascelin here may look...a tad frightening, but I can reassure you, he has no ill intentions and is a very friendly gentleman."

The Skydancer and Ascelin sat down across from him.

"Anyways, it's a pleasure to meet you, friend! My name is Elio of the Dawnguard and the Alchemists Tools, and this is Ascelin, a Night Warrior and a descendant of the Gatekeeper. And you are?"

Asclepius smiles.

"Asclepius of the Nightingales and the Celestial Runners. Happy to meet you both."

He hit it off with them instantly. The two of them were a surprisingly lively bunch, but it felt like a breath of fresh air, considering their lineages and how many of their relatives were. Elio reminded him of his mother - formal, but a bit rambunctious, and Ascelin reminded him of his brother, whose sarcasm made him laugh even on the worst days.

The two dragons, upon learning that the Pearlcatcher had nowhere to go, encouraged him to come with them. Their clan was small and had dire need of a healer to set up a hospital.

It took some convincing, but Asclepius eventually agreed. (to be continued; editing)

Asclepius loves assisting patients. Compared to his two cousins, Asclepius is calmer and more serious in personality. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that he doesn't know how to take a joke. As a matter of fact, he loves jokes and tells them on a daily basis. He's always more than happy to lend a hand to a lairmate, and will fight to protect those he cares for. He still sends letters to his family members on a daily basis.
