Ari was taught by her father, a fellow pearlcatcher, that their pearls were a symbol of arrogance and selfishness. Therefore, she does not have a pearl, and neither do her sons, Kerise and Val. After she was separated from her birth clan, she lived with a family of Myosotis Foxes for awhile. Her and her close friend Candytuft left to find a new home for themselves, but Ari was shunned for her lack of pearl, and for her strange behavior she had learned from the foxes. The two finally found the Abandoned, where Ari serves as a sort of archivist, treasurer, ambassador, and a part-time herbalist along with Rosalba and Ipomoea.
