This is a story about an Arcane dragoness. For a time, she studied astronomy at the Observatory. Of Arcane birth, she could handle the odd conflicting energies there well enough. She was a model student, very curious, intelligent, innovative, and dedicated. Then all of a sudden, she became obsessed with exploring the stars. It happened like that- like someone had hypnotized her. Her studies accelerated and broadened, with feverish passion that the uneasy professors said rivalled the Arcanist's own thirst. She became feverish and sometimes almost outright delirious. She was up all night, trying to peer through the telescopes and write in the charts at the same time. She said she was going to absorb all the knowledge of the stars. The professors called it a sickness, or that she was being invaded by arcane cosmic spirits. She mumbled in her sleep about stories and shapes in the stars, like constellations the professors knew, but as if they were talking to her. They sent her out of the study halls and observatories to an isolated room, thinking her mad. Cut off from the telescopes and the charts, she took the ink on her desk and painted the entire room with constellations and notes and formulas. They were horrified, and no one wanted to go near her. She soon ran out of room to draw on the walls and furniture. She began to paint on herself, tracing the heavens onto her own scales. On the particularly bad nights when she raved about all the knowledge spinning through her head, she tried to etch the stars into her own scales. Soon, she fell into a daze, a sleep, a coma. The professors and doctors were horrified when they checked on her. They tried to wipe the markings off her body, but it didn't work. They were her. |

When she awoke after her long dreams, they explained she could not live there any longer for fear of the star-fever coming again. She was calmer now, taking relief in the patterns she wore. She agreed to leave. She did not tell them about the knowledge she found. There had been too much. The spirits of the sky had tried to push into her willing mind, but there was too much science and too much beauty to be contained in her thoughts, so it had spilled over into her scales. She knew more now about the stars than perhaps any other dragon alive. She blamed the archaist for weakening the barriers, for enflaming her passions for the heavens. She renounced him and moved away from the Isles, cursing and covering her magenta eyes. But not once did she curse the heavens. The spirits, they became her friends, and she knew every constellation by name. She knew their story, their looks, where to find them, as if they were her dragon clanmates. She wandered south, following the celestial path of the galaxy. She settled in a Wind clan, and when asked, she insisted that she'd followed someone here. A dragon of the stars, like herself. The other dragon in the clan, who's scales also glimmered in celestial patterns, was deeply unnerved because every time she spoke about her journey, she stared at him when she mentioned 'following the other child of the stars'. Directly at him. Even with her blindfold-like cover. It's unnerving for many- how she travels better in the nighttime, moving like a ghost among the bamboo, whilst in the daylight she stumbled over logs and stones at every step. Sometimes she struggles to sense or locate dragons, save for the eternal exception of other dragons with star-maps on their bodies and constellations on their wings. it seems she can see them, even though her eyes are covered. They say when she lifts the veil, her eyes are oddly fragmented, bright, and swirling, like little galaxies, and that they shine from the depths like nebulae. They say that she can see the sky for all her shattered eyes, for she is the sky, and the heavens are within her. |
