Biography
Hunter
Coiling like smoke, the scent drifted through the air, weaving between the spindly trunks of ancient conifers, and seeping away into the moist earth. The hunt was on, and as the dark skydancer narrowed his eyes, a gruff yelp came from beyond a mossy bank. Slinking nimbly across the carpet of pine needles, Dusk was ready when the rabbit came bounding out from the bush it had been hidden within, startled by the sudden noise. As swiftly as he had cut across it's path, he brought the heavy cleaver down upon it's neck. From between the gnarled roots of a large redwood, a shadow crept across the clearing and came to a halt beside the rabbit, the blood of which was slowly oozing from it's fatal wound. Rather than chasing it away as any other dragon would have done, Dusk coaxed the black wolf towards him, and watched with what seemed like pride as the beast lapped at the red pool that now covered a patch of the forest floor.
"Come now, we have more to do in the little time we have before the sun sets. This rabbit is a good catch, plump and healthy, but with Winter so fast approaching we must catch far more than this."
Dusk tucked the rabbit into his hunting satchel and set off deeper into the woods, his loyal wolf familiar following at the sound of a whistle.
Hours passed as the cloaked hunter and his dark wolf companion stalked the forest, capturing the unsuspecting prey that lurked among the brittle ferns and bracken. At last the sky was engulfed in a raw orange flame, which blazed among the trees as the blackbirds sang their last symphony of the fading day. When all was still in the soot black of night, a howl broke the icy silence.
The hunter was alone in the dark, a flicker of unease glittering in his eyes. Upon hearing the chilling cry of a wolf who could only be his companion, he began to run. It was not meant to be like this... They should have been home by dark, safe and sound beside a crisp fireplace, their catches roasting above the flames. But Dusk could do nothing when his familiar darted away just as they were to head home, and was forced to remain even as the last drop of light seeped away, simply searching.
He found the wolf upon a clifftop, staring out at the forest. With a beat of his powerful wings, Dusk rose into the air, and glided up until he could perch upon the jagged cliff edge beside the black wolf. There was something in it's eyes, a sense of awe and yet terror, as if it had seen something. But the skydancer did not know what his familiar had seen, and did not know what to do about it. And so both creatures simply sat upon the cliff, gazing out at the forest and the endless starry sky, till the sun slipped over the horizon and, bathed in the gold light of dawn, the hunter and his wolf returned home.
