Fire mage

Failure is not the end. To fail is to learn; to get good at something, you must fail many, many times.

Gesmelte is a fire mage, originally born into an Arcane nest. Now residing in a Nature clan, the Guardian is under a lot of pressure to keep her destructive magic in check, lest her lair burn to the ground.
Her charge, her purpose in life, is to master this double-edged magic - she will frequently leave the lair, travelling sometimes days on end in order to find a spot that is safe to practice in. When she returns, her clanmates can be sure that her knowledge and skills have been carefully honed and enhanced. But they also worry - her expeditions often cause her injury or sickness, and she is reckless with her personal health. As long as she fulfills her charge, she is content.

It burned.
This time, she had failed. Gesmelte's magic spiraled out of her control, searing her hide and licking hungrily at the earth around her. Gesmelte roared in frustration. Her magic danced around her, beautiful and terrifying and wild. She lowered her head in frustration, feeling the flames on her scales.
I don't want to die.
Gesmelte flung herself into the stream to escape her magic.
"You run?"
The guardian heaved herself out of the water. Panting, gasping for breath, blinded by the smoke. A vague shape floated in front of her, ephemeral and entrancing.
"Are you afraid of death?"
"Aye," Gesmelte rasped. "But I'm burned to badly now."
A faint laughter floated through the foliage as it burned around her.
"You lost control."
"Aye." Gesmelte laid her head on the bank, craving the coolness of the mud on her burned hide. "I failed." She breathed heavily as the spirit faded away, leaving the guardian to the ruins of her charge. "I...failed. I don't deserve to live." With this, Gesmelte closed her eyes and lay, waiting for the flames.
I'm dying.
The flames roared into the clearing. Accelerated by her magic. Pain, searing pain, and then nothingness.
"I give you a second chance. Do not fail again, my Kintsugi."

Gesmelte awoke in the ashes of her training grounds. Instead of searing burns, golden streaks covered her. The gold of her belly gone, replaced by the patterns of the fish she favored. Gesmelte blinked and craned her head to look at herself. Healed, and very much alive.
"Kintsugi, eh?" Gesmelte shook her head and wobbily stood. "Guess I need to research this."
