Origin
Very, very few dragons survive a trip into the Don's treasure vaults. If you don't get lost, then the guardian Vault Beasts will get you. If you manage to avoid them, you'll starve if you lose your way. If you're going to survive, you have to be two things: fast and smart. Fast enough to outpace the hunters, and smart enough to cover your tracks. ....or to bring bribes for the Beasts.
A small group of hatchlings was thrown into the maze of vaults as an experiment by the Don. Whether it was a test of the Vault Beasts' hunting capabilities and ferocity, or a test for the hatchlings themselves is to this day unknown. Sealed into the dim tunnels, the hunting howls and bays of the Vault Beasts on their heels, the hatchlings would no doubt not last long.
Within a matter of a few hours, the first few hatchlings had succumbed to the fangs of the vault beasts, not having senses keen enough to detect their presence. A few hours more, and several others were found and corned by the hunting creatures, too tired to continue to run. Days passed, and still more lost the battles to hunger, thirst, and the ever-present threat from the Beasts.
Ten days after having sealed the vault, the Don opened it once more, to see the results of his test. He prowled the tunnels, searching every nook and cranny for details. The Beasts watched silently as their Master strode through his domain. Finally, the Don concluded his appraisal, and turned to leave, satisfied with what he saw. A movement caught the corner of his eye, and he spied something he had missed in his search- the piercing blue eyes of a single, scraggly hatchling. It watched the Don as silently as the Vault Beasts had, seemingly mute. Ushering a rare murmur of approval, the Don gestured for the hatchling to come out of its hiding place.
It remained still and silent, its gaunt frame near starvation. With a chuckle, he approached, reaching a paw out to yank it by the scruff of the neck. It squirmed, attempting an escape, but he held firm. This one had proven it's worth; it had survived the vault when no other hatchling had.
He raised the hatchling, "encouraging" him to continue building the traits that had allowed him to survive his time in the vault. For he would need them- he would make trips there, again, and again, and again. Each time, being light and speedy enough to outpace the Vault Beasts, being crafty enough to memorize tunnel paths and keep away from the areas they frequented. Learning new ways to survive; watching their environment. But each time, re-seeing every location a fellow hatchling had perished at. Reliving the first terrifying days in the vault until he had learned to pacify the beasts- at least for a while. The scent of blood, and the whimpers and screams of the fellow hatchlings were always replaying in his mind.
But he would proudly carry these bloody memories for life; after all, he was the only one to live while the rest did not. The others' sacrifice had ensured his survival, so it would not do to forget a single terrified face, a single scream of pain, or a single small corpse, left at the entrance to the Vault Beasts' den. Even if he would never speak of these memories, he would certainly never forget them. Learning to bribe the Beasts then was what allowed him to survive now; always bringing a small package of meat on his forays into the labyrinth of the Vaut...
