  there is a song, you’ve found, to fit any person, to click neatly with some soul-part of them like a key in a lock.
to make them cry for the first time in years, holding everything down,
to thaw through the numbness in their hearts and reach out to others at last,
to make them laugh until their breath catches in their chest and the stars dim for their smile,
regardless of the surroundings; time or place or company.

( sometimes, it doesn’t make sense to you, the pairs that happen, but it’s never bothered you.
you are a vessel, in a way - the words come to you and you happily project them forwards.
it isn’t yours to know why they fit, unless there’s a good story behind it -
then it’s your duty to find out, as any half-responsible storyteller could explain. )

the lewd limerick you hummed to a tune that made the dour field medic begin to hiccup for laughing.
the grim war song a hatchling asked from you, watching you with dark eyes as you sang to her of blood and bone and brotherhood, and she watched like she understood despite her age.
