Biography
Fulminis - Spark Witch - Transgender
Growing up in the Shifting Expanse was something of a competition. The Stormcatcher had demands for the clans under his protection, after all. He wanted workers of efficiency and prowess, inventors of great ingenuity and drive. He valued progress, and even more so, he valued progress that came at great speed. Nothing was more important than that.
And it was reflected in the many clans that dotted the dunes. The dragons that scuttled up and down the sides of teetering copper spires were the god's work ethic made manifest, the very essence of his bidding, and more often than not, they were happy to do his bidding. True, there were some exceptions, mostly dragons who hailed from less productive regions of Sornieth, but by and large, that was the way life should be: fast-paced, and delivering of results.
The clan Fulminis was born to was no exception from this rule. They were engineers for the most part, the brains behind the Tempest Spire, that great mechanical marvel that towered over the lair. They lived in its shadow, content to be second to the miracle overhead. It was a point of pride to exist in tandem with the Spire, and as she grew up, Fulminis never once considered that she might feel otherwise.
She belonged there anyhow. Perhaps it was natural genius, or perhaps it was her upbringing, but either way, she had the great fortune to be blessed with a quick mind and equally quick claws. From a young age, she was always tinkering with circuit boards and wires, finding power sources in the unlikeliest places, crafting silly machines to satisfying her adolescent whims. She wasn't yet efficient, but her elders saw potential and brilliance in what she considered merely play, something to occupy herself while her parents were hard at work on the Tempest Spire proper. She longed to go up there and join them one day, to be useful to her clan and the Stormcatcher, but also to stay close to her family, and the elders' offer gave her that chance. In exchange for her time spent in a rigorous training program, she would be promoted straight to the primary corps of engineers for the clan, all the way to the top.
It was too good to be true, though through no fault of the clan's own. Accidents happen to the best of dragons, as it's said, and Fulminis was not lucky enough to escape her fate. The first years of her training were intense but fulfilling, sharpening her natural wit and logic into something better than ever before, and she learned her way around more and more complex pieces of machinery used to harvest the storms of the Shifting Expanse to the greatest extent. She thrived in this new environment, eager to succeed and eager to learn where she had failed.
She was lucky to get a second chance, though, after she forgot to flip the proper series of safety switches on a lightning tumbler. The massive machine was used to spin lightning into power, to send it coursing through the desert via thick cables, and when she went to inspect it, it should have killed her. The shock was vicious, violent, and no one was able to intervene until the switches had been flipped in the proper order. By then, there was little hope for Fulminis.
Yet she survived, albeit changed. The surge of electricity had struck her in the face, blinding her and scarring the tissue around her eyes for good. It was quite the adjustment when she had once been so dependent on her sight, but in its place was an uncanny sense of electricity, one that pinged with every synapse firing in someone else's brain. It was a dark world, but it was one punctuated by flares of electricity that Fulminis understood much the same way she might understand flashes of light, and with that, she did not feel completely hopeless.
She did, though, feel it was time to leave, no longer able to serve the corps of engineers the way she dreamed of, and too keenly aware of the stares that followed her through the clan. Donning a hood, she set out in the world, following impulse after impulse until she found a place worth living in.
Now, much of her new clan is accustomed to her presence. Many still flinch if they catch sight of the scarring beneath her hood, and few know the exact extent of her story, but they welcome her nonetheless. Her apparently serious facade often gives way to sly teasing among her newfound friends, and she delights in every occasion that opens itself to blind jokes that she can make ahead of anyone else. It's a strange life, not the one she had imagined leading, but it is fulfilling nonetheless, and she never wants to leave.
Maybe the Shifting Expanse was once her home, but now, the Starfall Isles are everything she needs.
