Yokai lives with one hind foot in the land of living and one in the afterworld. As such, he can communicate with spirits traveling beyond the grave, as well as with those that still breath air. This ability makes him the perfect candidate to usher dragons from one world to the next. Sick and dying dragons seek him out to perform sacred burial rites or simply sit by their side to be a familiar face as they enter the afterlife.
It’s true that desperate dragons also seek him out in hopes that he can relay messages from their departed loved ones, but unfortunately, Yokai’s powers don’t work that way. He doesn’t control who he sees or when, and he also can’t differentiate between spirits and the living, which makes life a bit difficult. Growing up, he bounced around from clan to clan, most of them getting more than a little weirded out when he would start randomly conversing with dragons that no one else could see. Poor guy. Thankfully, he’s found the perfect place in Xayxayx clan, where his fellow clan members don’t even bat an eye when he starts talking into thin air. What’s more, they value his advice and insights that he gathers from those beyond the grave (i.e. their biggest regrets, the things they value most, their greatest accomplishments in life, etc.). Occasionally, one of these spirits asks Yokai to carry out some task that they failed to accomplish while living, and most of the time, Yokai obliges, unless the requests involves violence against other creatures, which Yokai firmly detests. Since he can communicate with them, Yokai feels that he has a duty to these departed souls and tries to do whatever he can to make their existence in the afterlife a bit more pleasant. |

History

I am a member of the Clan of the hallowed night. This clan only assembles once a year on a date they call the ‘Hallowed Night’.They believe that on the 31st of October* the divide between the living and the dead trembles and thins. It is a time to remember one’s ancestors and to celebrate the cycle of life and seasons. When they gather they throw an extravagant celebration with a grand feast and extraordinary entertainments. However dragons wishing to join them for the night must be warned; this is the season of change and duality and they also spend the night trying to terrify each other with tricks, stories, and costumes. Membership of the clan of the Hallowed night does not require you to give up any other allegiances, though many of its members find their home clan less accepting of split loyalties so keep their membership and yearly trips a secret. They believe that hatchlings born on this date are especially lucky and may be imbued with the magical energy of the night. It is also thought that the parents are blessed by this hatching. Chief Deity worshipped by this clan is the Shadowbinder who to them represents change and liminality. The Plaguebringer is worshipped almost as much being the representation of death and decay. However all the gods are referenced in their ceremonies and worship to some extent, dragons from flights across Sornieth are members of the clan and bring with them diverse customs and ideas. However members will often go out of their way to nest in domains of the Shadowbinder and Plaguebringer in advance of the night in the hope to curry more favour with the goddesses. Likewise the event is held at a secret location right on the border between the Scarred Wasteland and the Tangled Wood. *Translated to the equivalent date on earth for the benefit of human readers. |
