A Quiet Kind of Kindness
written by Talini If I could only chose one dragon I genuinely feel sorry for in this nightmare of a place, I would have to choose Cael. Despite his slightly intimidating appearance and eerily quiet nature, he's genuinely very sweet. (Well, after weeks of deciphering whether or not he can trust you he is.) It took me fifteen days of trying before he actually spoke to me for the first time and even then he barely spoke. It's all that Seraphina's fault. Apparently she told him he's not allowed any friends other than her and for whatever reason, he's totally petrified of going against her. I'm not sure how these two are connected, I always assumed they were brother and sister but I don't know if they're even related. Related or not, she's a bad influence on him. And everyone else but that's besides the point. We're not talking about her right now. She's a whole other kettle of fish. Cael works as a medic in the medical tent with that demon called Seraphina. I believe he's technically her assistant but he's perfectly capable of working on his own. He seems to be very good at his job, if not a little clumsy which always earns his superior's ire. Contrasting with the ridgebacks cruel and unusual form of medicine, Cael takes a more kind and nurturing approach to care. Every patient is treated gently and with great care taken to ensure that their needs are met and their recovery is swift, almost like the ideal doctor. If you end up in the medical tent for whatever reason, you'd better hope you get him instead of her. He also works as a host in the "freakshow" (in quotation marks due to the fact they aren't really freaks but manmade horrors. No-one's a freak. Not really. Alas, that's what the ringmasters call it and so we must oblige.) It's a known fact that surgeon Seraphina creates these so-called freaks in her lab but no-one's sure if Cael helps her out. The wildclaw does seem to care for them a lot, treating them like the dragons they are/were (unlike his superior, who treats them like dirt under her claws) but it seems unlikely that Seraphina could do what she does all on her own. If he does help her out, he almost definitely is forced into it and feels a lot of pity for his subjects. It's a real shame. Such a great talent wasted on such cruelty. One person he surprisingly gets along with is Vee from the arena. A completely different character entirely, being tough and aggressive compared the Cael's nervous nature. I don't know how they ended up friends, especially considering neither of them seem to like anyone else, but I'm happy for them nonetheless. It seems Vee ends up in the medical tent rather often due to the dangerous nature of his job so it gives him more of an opportunity to interact with the shy wildclaw and that's how people theorise they first met. Perhaps Seraphina is scared of Vee and his violent nature so lets Cael hang out with him but that seems unlikely consider her equally violent nature. Oh well. However they manage to spend time together, it's a lovely thing to see. He deserves a friend, no matter how unconventional the duo may be.
