Biography

When she arrived at his chambers, she hesitated at the door. This wasn't too intrusive, was it? She hardly knew him. She doubted he even knew who she was, but her curiosity wouldn't let her turn away. Mametun took a moment to steel herself before finally knocking at the door. Before her knuckles even hit the polished wood, she heard a soft voice call out from inside.

"Come in, Mametun."

Ah, of course. He had foreseen this. Tentatively, she pushed the door open. The room was dark, only illuminated by moonlight coming in from the windows. The scent of incense hung in the air. She let her eyes adjust to the dark and then searched for the tundra's form. Mametun found him sitting at a small table, claws stretched out to rest upon a crystal ball. She made her way to him and then sat opposite him on a small velvet pillow. They were nearly the same age, but he looked so much older, wiser.

There was a pause, before An lifted his head. "You have come to me with questions, no?"

"Y-yes." She sounded unsure, even to herself.

"Then ask away." His voice was so much more casual-sounding than she had anticipated. She fumbled for words, suddenly forgetting the dozens of questions she had.

"Did it hurt? When you lost your eyes?", she blurted. Mametun immediately cringed at her words; that was too forward! He must think her a tactless fool. She was annoying and embarrassing as always. Still mentally berating herself, she was caught off guard by his sudden laugh.

"Ha! No it did not hurt. The process does not maim the eyes, it is simply another kind of opening them."

She lifted her face from her hands, still burning with embarrassment. "Um, I'm sorry for that. I just.. I want to know what to expect, when my time comes."

"You are nervous. Hmm." It wasn't a question, so much as a statement. Nodding to himself, he suddenly rose to his feet. He turned to walk towards a small metal cabinet and began shifting through it's contents. She watched as he felt each object, feeling for the right shape and texture. It took a minute, but his hands finally closed around something. He made his way back to her, effortlessly navigating the room despite his blindness. Seating himself back on his pillow, he brought his hands up, still grasping the object.

"You have already decided for yourself that you do indeed want to open your eyes, yes? Why have you come to this decision? For who, or what purpose?"

She looked down at her lap, fidgeting with her hands. "I hate being ignorant. I hate not knowing what to do, and being unsure of every choice I make. I don't even know if this is the right choice. I'm not smart or wise. I'm no good with magic or studying." She paused, taking a shaky breath. "Really all I have is divination, and I don't even feel like I'm good at that. Everyone says I have a gift or a talent, but I can't remember the most basic prayers or altar arrangements. What use is talent if I can't even get the basics right? Everyone else is getting better but I'm still stuck in the beginner classes. Why did the Arcanist choose me to get these visions? Why not someone who is actually worthy?"

"You just said it. The Arcanist chose you. Isn't that reason enough?"

She was silent for a moment. "But...why me? You... you were always skilled, right? You are the obvious choice! I'm not like you. I'm..." Her voice trailed off. She didn't know how to voice her thoughts; they were all so loud, jumbled. An's voice brought her back to the room.

"You are speaking to a tundra! I was not always this focused, this competent. I struggled greatly; I still struggle at times. The incense you smell, it is to remind me. I too, had difficulty at first. I needed to use smells to remind me of what others could easily retain. It is no different now, I merely am guided more closely than before."

She was surprised. "You? Not remembering the Arcanist's invocations? And.. still you were chosen..." She contemplated this for a moment.

"Yes. We are merely mortals, short-sighted and unwise to what the gods know. Do not be so unsure of yourself. If the Arcanist sees greatness in your future, who are you to doubt it? I believe you were chosen not for who you are but for who you will be." He reached out and took one of her hands, placing the object he had retrieved in hers. The object was warm, solid and heavy. She looked at it and was suddenly overcome with certainty. It was a figure of the Arcanist, intricately carved out of stone, meteorite.

"Thank you." She bowed her head in gratitude, holding the carving close to her chest. "Your words mean a lot to me. I don't think I'm so nervous anymore." She resumed staring at the figure, marveling at it's craftsmanship.

"I am glad. I do see brightness in your future, but I'm sure you could tell that already." An smiled warmly, but his expression suddenly changed to a frown. Cocking his head, he asked, "Mametun... I believe the Divination class is currently in session, no?"

"Ah!" She shot up, almost dropping the figure in the process. Panic was written across her face, her frills fanned out in disarray. "Professor Nanshe will be furious, this is the third time this week!" Mametun started towards the door and almost left, but she froze and turned back to face An. "Um, thank you again... I should get going though. B-bye!" She resumed her exit, forgetting to close the door.

An couldn't help but laugh.
