Aquaria Clan Founder & Leader, Elementalist |
Lore title Written by FourLeaf |
This wasn't the nauseating scent of air gone stale with ancient magic. This wasn't the dry, arid storms that threw sand against her wings. This wasn't the stillness of the trees and the sharp sting of pine needles under her talons. No, it wasn't any of those.
The cool air of the sea flowed around her scales once again, carried by the winds from the plateaus in the sky above. It was everything she had ever wanted. It was home.
And yet, something was still missing. Perhaps it was the clan who had not yet followed in her wingbeats. or perhaps it was something darker. Aquaria pulled her pearl closer to her chest, turning her gaze to the abandoned city in the cliffs.
She wasn't sure what had happened to wipe out an entire city. She wasn't entirely sure that it was abandoned, either. Eyes seemed to stare at her through the shadows, vanishing when she tried to meet their gaze; the echoes of her footsteps multiplied behind her, continuing even when she stood still.
But there was hope for this place. Many buildings were still intact, with small gardens and fresh water nearby. What better place could there be for a clan to call home?
"Hello?" Aquaria called out for what felt like the hundredth time that day. There was no answer to her call; she didn't expect one, even as something skittered away in the shadows. She let out a soft huff in annoyance. Whatever it was would just have to deal with its new dragon neighbors.
She closed her eyes, spreading her wings and turning her nose to the sky. But it wasn't the cool breeze of the sea that she felt against her scales — it was the still, slightly stale air of the forest. The soft, golden sand she had once dug her talons into had been replaced with the sharp sting of pine needles and brambles.
The dragon sighed, turning her gaze to the lustrous pearl that sat between her talons. She wasn't sure why she kept it — fear, perhaps, of what others might think if she didn't? A small, round pebble sat at its center; it was just something she had picked up at some point during her travels, simply because she liked the shape of it. She felt no attachment to that pebble, or the pearl that surrounded it.
She flicked her ears back at the approaching sound of flapping wings and a familiar voice. She didn't need to turn around.
"Oce— I mean, Aquaria," the Fae began, landing next to her. She didn't respond, too deep in thought to notice his mistake.
He settled next to her, listening to her silence for a moment. "You're missing it again, aren't you?" His monotone voice was softer than before, perhaps a result of him not wanting to break the peacefulness of the woods.
"What if we made a mistake?" Aquaria turned to look at the little dragon. He was her oldest friend, and perhaps one of her closest. They had stuck together since they were hatchlings — well, mostly. Some things were best left unspoken.
"What do you mean?" Wavelength's frills folded slightly, indicating his confusion.
"Leaving the Sea," Aquaria whispered softly, letting out another sigh. "Maybe we never should have left."
"After all this? What about the search for Tidelord? The dreams of mastering magic?" The Pearlcatcher fell silent at his words, unsure of how to answer. "We can't stop now," the Fae added, a slight edge to his words.
"... but can we keep going?" For a moment, her blue eyes locked with his, but she quickly turned away. "I had dreams — we both did. But we have a clan now, a family. Maybe... maybe we should forget those dreams."
"Just think about it, alright? Give this place a chance."
Aquaria bared her teeth after him as he turned to leave. Of course he would like a big, sappy forest. She had been in his position, it seemed such a long time ago... but the air and the waves of the open sea called to her.
She wasn't sure how much time had passed after Wavelength's departure. It could have been a few minutes, or a few hours. She had let her mind wander, perhaps a bit too far. Thoughts had come and gone like waves, some that made her happy, some that seemed darker than the forest around her.
It was only then that she realized the forest seemed darker than it usually was, as if it were night. Aquaria let out yet another soft sigh.
