A world-weary pearlcatcher trudges solemnly across the wasteland that is the plague territory. He knows he must be close to his destination. He has heard stories of a sanctuary for all flights somewhere in plague, a great mountain topped with a small yet flourishing kingdom. Thats what sent him on this journey.
What if its just some wild goose chase?
He banishes the thought. He sighs, allowing his tail to drag and wings to droop, but still scanning the landscape warily. He wants so badly to plop down and rest, but if he were to do so he might not get back up. Besides, last place he stopped was someone's territory, and he was violently chased off.
What if there's nothing? What if I die out here, looking for a mere mirage?
There has to be something else he can think about... Anything? No, nothing. There is nothing. No fascinating scenery, no memories or thoughts left he has not examined and criticized, nothing. Only his foolishness is left to think about.
The tired pearlcatcher finally stops. His hindlegs give out and he drops his head. He feels his pearl roll off his back and fall into the vile dust around him, but does not care.
I have failed.
"Keep going,"
"What?"
"Keep going,"
"Why?"
"You're almost there,"
"Where?"
"Your destination, of course,"
As he almost moved to shoot the speaker a skeptical glare, he realises he has been alone until this point. Where had this dragon come from? Who was it? He turns his head slowly. A transparent purple dragon, a veilspun maybe, hovers beside him. It smiles, then winks out of existence.
Unnerved, the pearlcatcher looks around again. Was that a ghost? Maybe he should keep going? He hauls himself to his feet again, with great effort. He will keep going, and will find the mountain kingdom, or die on his feet trying.
