"Dominic, Dominic, Dominic."

Dominic found the imperial Mena to be seldom impressed with him, and today was no different. She tsked and raked judgmental eyes over his injuries.

Mena wondered: "To be this old and to come back this battered...?"

He could not help but bristle. Dominic didn't deserve such an unfair assessment. Sure, Mena was--well--his grandmother, but in their clan? They were peers. Both old. Both valued. "I have done more than you, in all your years."

Mena leaned in close. Her dual sets of antlers rose higher than his own, and swept out wider than his own. She was an old thing, but so was Dominic. He refused to be cowed.

Dominic said, "You gave up the fight. I haven't." You see, Mena had quit while she was ahead. She had left such time for others to surpass her. "Your mettle, these days, is as untested as a hatchling."

At that, there was nothing to Mena. There was nothing that Dominic could recognize. She was as still as the glacial spires in the Fortress of Ends, and suddenly, to Dominic, about as tall. His own grandmother never struck him as fearsome before.

Fighting clanmates was far from forbidden. Almost encouraged, actually, though it would be rather gauche for blood-kin like them to carve dividing lines in each other's scales. Would this be the moment where his illustrious heritage no longer mattered? She was the surviving link to the clan leaders in his family tree. She could sever his ties as surely as his father's. The solid steel helmet he wore seemed brittle and weightless atop his head now.

Puffs of frost filled the air between them as Mena began to laugh. It escaped in small bursting giggles, at first, then deepened to belly laughs. "Darling boy. I just want you to be better." There was a sparkling shine in her ice-reflective eyes that struck him as very, very sad. "You are the firstborn son of my firstborn son. Not everything must be so serious."
