Biography
Some dragons enjoy living life to the fullest, but Chrestomanci prefers to take it slow. As far as he’s concerned, there’s no point in rushing through life if the end goal is to eventually become an adult. After all, being an adult means work, no nap times, and not being able to get away with thing via the virtue of cuteness. No thanks. He’d rather stay a hatching for as long as possible, and then remain a hatchling through force of will - even when it’s time for him to become an adult.
Against all odds, this actually worked. Despite easily being one of the oldest dragons in the bab gaggle, Chrestomanci is the only dragon to have retained his youthfulness without having gone through a magical voodoo ritual, fallen into Baldwin’s cauldron, or had a fateful encounter with a vile entity. Nobody’s quite sure how he’s staying a hatchling. It’s possible that he knows a spell, or has a special constitution, or perhaps ate something funny during yesterday’s breakfast. Or maybe he’s just too lazy to grow up. Anything’s possible in the Starfall Isles, and knowing Chrestomanci’s personality, the lack of effort is vying for first place.
As a member of the bab gaggle, Chrestomanci’s hobbies involve napping, finding a warm place to nap, and occasionally sitting on one of the adults to nap. He will use his cuteness and fluffiness to his advantage when convincing someone to serve as a pillow (though many of his clanmates would point out that they’d let him sleep on them without the fluttering eyelashes and small purring.) During the rare times he’s not serving as a nap buddy for the other hatchlings, Chrestomanci likes to spend his time chasing small animals, butterflies, and balls of yarn. He will also attempt to display his hunting prowess by stalking all the pillows in the clan, and then pouncing on them when the time is just right. Then he’ll drag the pillow back to the hatchery, where it’ll never see the light fo the day again. His clanmates would complain about this small thievery, but considering how harmless it is compared to Starfall’s blender or Primrose’s crusade against water, they’re willing to let it slide.
Chrestomanci is notably one of the quietest members of the bab gang - which isn’t surprising, considering how much time he spends napping. He prefers communicating through body language, which makes him a good friend of Adevi, who appreciates his attempts at learning Fae sign language. He’s also especially good friends with Terrell, who is the only other baby who can communicate with him in Coatl, and the two can often be found discussing the best places to nap. (Anywhere with sunlight.) Chrestomanci is also a good friend of BlackSlime as well, and does his best to help out the Bogsneak in the library, even if he doesn’t really understand half the things the other hatchling is trying to attempt. Fortunately, Chrestomanci doesn’t get frustrated easily (too much effort), and his mild nature makes it easy for him to get along with everyone. Even when he does get angry, the farthest he’s gone is to fluff up in a very furious ball of rage and fly at the nearest dragon with claws outstretched. This is quite the ineffective way to attack someone (his claws can’t pierce through dragon scales) but most dragons are happier to fake being injured than infuriate him more.
Most of the time, though, Chrestomanci’s just there to live the good life and nap in warm and comfy places. Any spot he chooses to sleep in is automatically recognize as the most comfortable place in the clan, and worth fighting over for. Chrestomanci is completely oblivious to the fights the other hatchies have over his sleeping spot. Though to be fair, unless it disturbs his naps, he’s not very interested in much else.
