With close ties to her father, Vindicta, Charybdis wandered the deserts with him, learning how to torment a starving dragons mind with hallucinations. Unlike her twin, Scylla, who was inclined towards the sea, Charybdis found that the scorching heat of the desert was where she belonged, and it was where she could hide herself among the dull colors best. Preferring to lay traps insead, Charybdis was known for being a trickster, impeding on dragons life to give herself entertainment.

However as she aged, her once harmless tricks slowly became more destructive, and she ventured into dangerous territory with who she challenged. Experimenting and daring to inflict some of her games on her father, she soon found that to trifle with him would be a large mistake. When one of her divertissements caused him to loose a group of dragons and allow them to get away, the imperial turned on his student and daughter enraged. Ferocious with his retaliation, he held no hesitation when he cursed her, condemning Charybdis to never grow content and forever be plagued by thirst. No matter how much water she swallowed, her throat would remain dry, and no matter how much food she ate, her stomach would feel hungry.

Fleeing from the desert and away from her father, she arrived at her twins lair, begging for help. Unable to bare the immense need, she submerged herself in water, desperately trying to quench her thirst and devour any animal or dragon that strayed to close to her underwater cave.

  • Charybdis aided her father Poseidon in his feud with her paternal uncle Zeus and, as such, helped him engulf lands and islands in water. Zeus, angry over the land she stole from him, captured and chained her to the sea-bed. Charybdis was then cursed by the god into a hideous bladder of a monster, with flippers for arms and legs, and an uncontrollable thirst for the sea. As such, she drank the water from the sea thrice a day to quench it, which created whirlpools. She lingered on a rock with Scylla facing her directly on another rock, making a strait.
  • The Strait of Messina, with Scylla and Charybdis on the opposite shores
The sea monster Charybdis was believed to live under a small rock on one side of a narrow channel. Opposite her was Scylla, another sea monster, that lived inside a much larger rock. The sides of the strait were within an arrow-shot of each other, and sailors attempting to avoid one of them would come in reach of the other. To be "between Scylla and Charybdis" therefore means to be presented with two opposite dangers, the task being to find a route that avoids both. Three times a day, Charybdis swallowed a huge amount of water, before belching it back out again, creating large whirlpools capable of dragging a ship underwater. In some variations of the story, Charybdis was simply a large whirlpool instead of a sea monster.
