 Nightwisp is selfless in many ways, but it's incredibly obvious that his high emotional state can go from heartfelt and meaningful to downright dramatic.

That being said, his job is vital.
As the Sentinel, he takes care of the Sentries and Guards, ensuring they are getting enough rest and taking care of themselves throughout the night. Without him, some of the more rigorous dragons like Vaida and Xannan could easily work themselves to death.
These duties involve making up their beds for them, bringing them food and water, tending any injuries, and determining if they are well enough to keep up their nightly duties.

In addition to this, his deep capacity for emotions becomes important when spending his evenings in vigil to the Windsinger. Nightwisp sends up prayers, sacrifices of incense and songs to the heavens over the course of the night, requesting protection and blessing for his clan.

Come morning he passes out from exhaustion; he is nothing if not dedicated and eager to please.
