“Seek Unity and you will find neither Unity nor Truth. Seek the light of truth, and you will find Unity and Truth“ – C.S. Lewis

Origins -

The Nesting Grounds were in chaos. Dragons of all kinds were doing their best to get their eggs to safety. There had been risk in making their lair in this place, but the younger majority of the clan had not listened to the warnings of the elder Ice dragons, who had seen this thing happen time and again. The Ice was melting and their structures were crumbling, taking everything inside down into the sea with them.

A frantic mother was gathering her eggs in a wicker basket, then took those hatchlings on her back who could not yet fly. Every dragon was struggling to get as much of their young to safety, so in the mayhem, no one paid attention enough to see a single egg slip from the wicker basket. The drakaina had just taken off, and so the egg fell onto a thin ledge of ice, broke through the melting ice and fell down the snow-covered hill.

By the time anyone went to look for it, the egg was already covered in a layer of snow and was hidden from view, only protected by the layer of ice that encased the eggs of Ice dragons. It is uncertain how long it laid there, but it was found after some time. A wandering Longneck had tripped over the egg and at first cursed the stone hidden in the snow, before he realized what he had really found.

He had come to the Southern Icefield to meet with other Beastclans to plan an attack on the Ice dragons and had just been on his way back home. A thought struck him. With a dragon on their side, surely the Beastclans could regain some of their land! No adult dragon would ever join with them, but surely he could train a hatchling to obey him. With that idea, the Longneck put the egg into his bag and made the journey homewards, to his clan in the Wind territory.

Wind Rune

The Spiral that hatched from the egg was of a dark blue color, which blended well with the dark cave the Longneck hid it in. He made sure the wyrm understood that if anyone saw him, they would think he was a monster. The hatchling asked what a monster was and the Longneck told tales of terrible wyrms that attacked villages and destroyed homes. He talked of battles and bloodshed and those few warriors that could drive back the monsters and retain their clans in what was now called Dragonhome. These tales often ended with a reminder that he would not be accepted in his clan easily and that he had to be patient.

The young dragon eagerly listened to every tale and promised to not let himself be seen until his caretaker allowed it. Over time, the wyrm grew and the Longneck began to worry about how to feed it. Seeing as his clan was vegetarian, he would immediately be suspicious if he brought any meat to feed the wyrm, so he gathered insects daily. But it seemed like it was never enough. The wyrm still claimed it was hungry.

And then came the day others found the hidden cave in the Longnecks home. The wyrm was discovered and the scared Longnecks attacked it. Terrified, the wyrm left his cave for the first time in his short life and the Longnecks who came after him smashed their way through his caretaker's home and destroyed everything in their path. ‘Home destroyers,’ thought the young drake and fled the cave, scared out of his mind of the monsters from the tales he’d been told. And they were everywhere! He left his caretakers home only to find many more of the monsters that had chased him from his home. With no one to look to for help, the dragon ran off, hoping to get far away from the danger. And blindly running as he was, he did not see the sheer drop ahead until it was too late.

The wind whipped around him. He had never been taught how to use his wings and the ground was rushing up fast to meet him. Whatever instincts saved him from this unfortunate and soon end, he would forever be thankful for. His six little wings caught the wind and he was gliding away from the cliff and the monsters who had taken his home.

He rushed away, the light of dawn and the wind around him as strange and unfamiliar as the grass below and the sky above. When the sun came out, he hid from its brightness in the roots of an old tree. The Spiral thought of the tales his caretaker had told him, of the great warriors of Dragonhome who could slay the fearsome monsters threatening their home. He fell asleep that night dreaming of ancient pillars destroyed by monsters and expanses of rocky terrain housing friendly folk who faced could face those monsters and keep their homes safe.

The next morning, he began his journey. It was hard to learn how to fly on his own, but he managed. Within a few days, his flight was smooth and controlled and he whipped through the sky in tangles and twirls. He had never felt such joy and freedom before, but also never forgot his quest to safe his caretaker and home from the monsters.

But his efforts were not rewarded. When he finally, after weeks of travel, arrived in Dragonhome looking for help, the monsters found him again and chased him away. He hid in the mountains and observed as beings similar to him came and were beaten back as well. He was the monsters and the wyrms fall and came to an unthinkable realization.

Had the tales been lies? Were there any brave warriors? Or were there only monsters? The wyrms who came here destroyed villages, and the Longnecks who fought back destroyed lives. Shaken, the young Spiral took flight once more, intent on getting away from the battle-torn region.

He flew blindly into the distance, uncaring of where he ended up. Still, he hid from sunlight like he had been raised to do, but this time he was woken up. Startling awake, he locked eyes with others of his kind for the first time in his life.

Nature Rune

There had been much to learn. The drake was taken into the Holocene Clan and spent a long time breaking down what he had been taught from birth. He now carried a name of his own: Mordred. It hurt to know that such an important thing had been denied to him by his caretaker. The other dragons told him the same tales his caretaker had, but in different ways. The truth rang out clearly, but he could not hear it for what it was. The dragons may not be the monsters of his childhood, but the Beastclans were not the pests the dragons saw them as either. Torn on the matter many dragons fought for, he decided to dedicate his life to seeking the truth. He learned how to read and write, acquired ancient books and story scrolls. In the process he discovered alchemy as a fun hobby and often brewed as he read and talked to other dragons. Doing so many things at once was something he relished in and he thought of all the times he had literally tied himself into knots in his childhoof cave so he would have something to do.

And maybe he overdid it sometimes. He would be brewing and studying one moment and then asleep on the floor the next. The first time this happened, he accidentally spilled a potion on himself that had bleached his scales in places. Mordred learned from this mistake and studied his own patterns of activity to predict when it was safe to brew.

He never did find a conclusive answer to the question he sought to answer, though. It seemed the conflict between Dragonkind and the Beastclans had persisted for too long to fins the reason for it now. Neither side had an objective record of history and so, over time, he halted his research in the field completely. Instead, he devoted himself solely to his prowess as an alchemist. His speedy delivery of requested potions had made for quite a good income, and seeing as he was always brewing several potions at once, he was happy to provide the potions other dragons needed.

The network of the clan he was now a part of felt warmer and more welcome than what he had called home as a hatchling. The home he had found here may not have brought him the truth he was looking for, but he knew it was more honest than the place in the Windswept Plateau that a small portion of his soul still clung to. Talking to other dragons about this brought him comfort, however, since many dragons in the Clan had come from elsewhere, places outside the Viridian Labyrinth. They all agreed they held love for their birthplace, but also seemed firm in the belief that their home was here.
