Pain. Blinding pain.
Or wait…blinding…blinding…the shell…she was through her shell, hatched into the world…why was there…blinding…pain…
Her first memories were pain. Pain and the voices. She tumbled out of the remnants of her shell, head swimming with the pain. Her eyes…something was wrong. All she could see was flashes of light, segments of colour. Distorted shapes.
The voices all around her swelled.
“Blessed!! She has been blessed!! Our clan has been blessed, praise Plaguebringer, the Wyrmwound has brought us great power!!”
Voices collided and ran together, all trying to be the first, the loudest, the most jubilant.
All were dulled by the pounding in her skull at each beat of her heart.
A pearlcatcher hatchling’s first job in the world is to shape their first memory. A proud occasion, the start of their pearl.
Hers was not proud. The pain forced the vomit out of her. It contained nothing but fear and anguish, sculpting the first pieces of her soul.
If I could just CLOSE my eyes…
But she could not. She was left, ruined in the distorted light and the praising voices.
