This drone was scouting in the desert when it picked up the scent of an unfamiliar drone and went to investigate. If it was one of its hivemates, they would join forces and complete their missions together. If it was from a rival hive, they would fight and one would kill the other. Either way, they would meet and exchange information.

Instead, the new drone attacked as soon as it came in sight, moving with such ferocity that this drone was swiftly overwhelmed. It was not killed, but dragged to a desert cave and shut in.

For weeks, the drone was trapped. It raged and fought and threw itself against the unyeilding stone. It howled and screamed, but its cries were swallowed up by the dry air. Its connection to the Hivemind grew weaker and weaker in isolation, until one day, it stopped.

When the connection stopped, so did the drone. It did nothing to stop its captor (no longer thought of as another drone; no drone was capable of this cruelty) from feeding it, bandaging its scrapes and injuries, making noises with its mouth. Even when its captor finally spoke to it in the language of the hive, it was incomprehensible. family? safety? danger? freedom? The words were meaningless to the drone.

The drone did not die, as its captor would not let it, and after a long time he began to understand. However, the newly dubbed Five did not forgive.

There was no happiness in the hive, but there was no happiness now. He had not suffered, or if he had, he hadn't known he had suffered. The days of disconnection, the empty period when the hive Consciousness was gone but his own consciousness hadn't arisen had been torture. Even if Four felt the need to protect her "family" from him, why hadn't she killed him? Or simply driven him off? The hive would not accept him again in this state.

Five left, flying away from Four, and eventually found himself on a Nature flight coast. He didn't fit in there, but no one who lived there fit in. The town's backlots were filled with misfits, miscreants, and dragons who did not belong there or anywhere. He began doing jobs that no one else would, for dragons who didn't ask or answer questions.

Five had made it to Pumpkin Center.

Rusty was one of the first dragons Five met in Pumpkin Center. Although she wasn't quite sure what he was (and she still isn't), she introduced him to a few warehouse bosses in Salt Fork and helped him get his first acting gig: playing the monster in a low-budget creature feature.
