As it turns out, a Lightning dragon can possess too much energy.

This is the harsh lesson Claudette learned throughout the course of her childhood. She fit in well enough with other hatchlings, but as she grew, rather than leveling out, her vivacity grew with her. None of her clanmates had ever encountered a dragon with such an indomitable zest for life. Worse, they had no earthly idea what to do about it—and something did have to be done about it, because she simply couldn't learn to be an asset to the community if she refused to sit still.

However, her mother, a shrewd woman, saw potential in her. Energy like Claudette’s could be turned into energy for the clan, if she could only work out how to go about it. She studied the inventions of countless experts in the fields of engineering and electronics, until at last she had put together a machine to eclipse them all.

In theory, the machine would sap Claudette of her excess magical energy. Her mother believed that there was lightning built up inside of her that she could not release, and by harvesting it, not only would she be able to live a normal life, but the clan would have power for generations to come.

Claudette stepped into the machine, prepared to do her duty…

...and emerged a wrecked shell of her former self.

She hid the burns beneath cloth and mask; her lost limbs, she replaced with prosthetics. Her mother, overcome with guilt, destroyed the machine, but Claudette could not forgive her. They each left the clan, and have been estranged since that fateful, miserable day.

For a time, Claudette wandered without direction, enjoying a brief freedom from the conventions of clan life—and might have gone on like this forever, had she not stumbled upon a caravan of inventors. These dragons, gifted in architecture, metalwork, and machinery, taught her what it truly meant to be an engineer. Inspired by their pride and diligence, Claudette devoted herself fully them, until such a time as she had learned all that they could teach her.

Finally, she had found her purpose.
