Mako's egg was lost to the sea, and hatched in an eelgrass bed off the coast of the Ashfall waste. He was feeding on little things in the grass when he was joined by 4 young male leopard sharks, who had also recently hatched. The 4 accepted him as another shark, and welcomed him into the pack. He lived like this for many years, never wondering much about why his fins looked different than the other sharks, or why he could breathe the air. But one day, while the pack was resting in a sea cave, he breached the surface to take a look around, and heard a strange humming tune echoing throughout the cave. He swam silently towards the sound, and saw a red glow coming from a shelf above him, out of the water. he slipped quietly from the water to investigate. however, he was unused to being out of the water, and his feet slapped loudly against the cold stone. The humming stopped, and Ruby whipped around, seeing the ridgy hunched low to the ground (at the time he believed he was quite hidden). She tried questioning the curious ridgy, but he was unable to speak, as he had only ever communicated with his pack. He was intrigued by her, and began visiting often when his pack was resting in the sea cave. Ruby informed Arc and Chai, who came down and began teaching Mako draconic sign language. Mako is now well acquainted with the Soot Snout dragons, and is considered an honorary member of the clan, along with his pack. The sharks have settled in Ruby's sea cave, though Mako and the pack leave for the winter and swim North to warmer waters. He has also become a member of the guard, as his many years in the sea have turned him into a skilled fighter. He grew far beyond the size of the sharks in his pack, so became their defender against attacks from the larger creatures of the sea. His years of fighting and hunting has gained him countless scars which have healed to look like shimmering opal.
