Magnus, meaning "Great" in Latin, was used as cognomen of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus in the first century BCE. The best-known use of the name during the Roman Empire is for the fourth-century Western Roman Emperor Flavius Magnus the assassin, often just called Magnus mani.

Magnus was something once, they’re sure of it. They don’t know why their knowledge was taken from them, why someone would bother destroying their memory rather than killing them outright. They weren’t sure at first, of course. They’d been left with memories of a comfortable enough life. No family, no mate, but a little homestead in the middle of nowhere and some cozy (though blurred) memories of sunning themselves as they looked out over their fields. The cracks started showing when they tried joining a clan. There were these glimpses, flashes really, blurred colors and sounds that only resolved themselves in aggregate. They wrote down everything, trying to chain it all together into something coherent. Some...ritual? Spell? Magic, for sure. They knew they’d had magic. Did they still have it in some deep-down place, though even basic charms were agonizingly difficult now? Was it magic that seeped into the field when they walked out on those starless nights? Was that why someone tried to make them believe that they’re afraid of the dark?
