Biography
I belong to Enriana, user ID #284903
Heralds come and heralds go, just as dawn comes and goes. We give little thought to the rise and set of the sun, yet every sunrise and sunset is a carefully orchestrated dance, one never quite the same as the one before it.
Keepers come and keepers go, just as dusk comes and goes. Vesper cannot remember a time when he did not steer the chariot that pulled the sun beyond the horizon and into the sky, the course of east to west and west to east so familiar that it is imprinted upon him, upon wing and body, feather and scale.
Watchers come and watchers go, for no one individual is capable of bearing the responsibility of making sure the sun rises and sets as it should. Instead, there is always a partnership: a charioteer and a light-bearer, one to set the course and another to light the way, coaxing the sun away from any distractions or detours.
Aigle is the light-bearer now, who lifts the sun up every morning to begin the dawn and rests it gently beyond the horizon, bringing dusk to the world at precisely the right moment. It is she who walks among the creatures that dwell in the liminal spaces, the in-between times where it is neither light nor dark but both at once.
The sky is their home, their duties a much-loved calling. Their eyes are attuned to spot the endless variations in sunrise and sunset - none ever the same - and, below, to watch the lives of the people whose worlds they illuminate.
Of this world but not in it, they are heralds and shepherds, keepers and protectors, guardians and guides. Together they give us day and night, dawn and dusk, a rhythm so reliable that we hardly think of it. Except, perhaps, when we gaze up at the sky on a clear day and spot, just out of the corner of our eye, two figures moving steadily along, bringing forth the sun.
