Mariana was born in the Gladeveins, but in childhood followed ~~a voice~~ her heart to the Leviathan Trench, where she lived as ~~the Angler's~~ something's ward until becoming the the augur and oracle of the Crew.

She came to the clan up from the depths to guide and aid them, so she says. As the first member aside from the progenitors, she has a certain seniority, and keeps a careful eye on the crew members she deems of high concern - whatever that means.

She knows where to hunt and where to hide, and what other - larger - things live in the darker crevasses. It is Mariana to whom the clan comes with questions - not of social matters, but of stranger things.

What is to be done about nightmares? What makes whale song in a lake with no whales? Where does Tethyan go, when he wanders? She may not tell you, but she knows.

In truth? Mariana is only here because she tried to collect an Observed hatchling, whom ~~the Angler~~ someone had already claimed as their own, but the fledgling clan got to Kermadec first. She sees in his blood much of what she sees in herself and Hadal, and she knows that she must be there if, in adulthood, he chooses to dive below.

She wishes someone had been there for her.

Mariana is in a committed partnership with the physicist Hadal, and is good friends with his former student Syzygy. The trio's deep mutual respect is born out of some indescribable shared experience in trenches too deep for the others to have ever ventured. Together, they can keep what knowledge they have alive.

Pass it on through blood, even.

Perhaps, from their bloodline, there will come something which the things in the deep might accept as tribute in exchange for protection. Perhaps, through what they are and what they know, they might bring the Crew peace and safety. What cost could possibly be too high?

She loves her children - even the ones she has forgotten, in another life. Her first clutch with Hadal bore the Abyssal Triplets Ingotia, Anthelia, and née Ixion, none of them marked by the Thing that Watches or ~~its mate~~ anything else. She is not certain whether to be relieved.
