Drifters have been around for ages, but have been thought to be extinct because of their weakness to pollution. However, this is not the case. Drifters once resided near the ocean’s surface, where they would ensure the healthy growth of young coral reefs and kelp beds. By nature, Drifters are oracles that prophesy and deliver their messages as bubbles, but they also possess a natural affinity for healing magic, which they used to keep their homes among the reefs pure and clean.
As time went on and territories expanded, the homes of the Drifters were tainted by the waste and murk of the Plague and Shadow territories. As many fell victim, their bodies and wings poisoned by the pollution, the Drifters fled to the depths of the Sea. They now hide, sheltered and camouflaging among some of the Sea’s more colorful coral reefs. They assist seabed plants to grow, occasionally surfacing to visit the grave beds of their fallen friends.
Their natural ability to cleanse and purify the waves is thought to have originated from the way they were created. Some believe they were once small seahorses, swaying against the kelp beds from the ocean’s pull. Others believe that they were once prophecies from Tidelord himself, lost into the Sea’s ever changing currents where they evolved into dragons from being over-saturated with magic.
Whenever they’re not growing ocean plants, Drifters seek out ways to purify their bodies. They once thought that if they stayed in the purest parts of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, they would eventually heal over time. A Drifter’s lifespan is designated from the amount of stripes they have along their spines. They took pride in their long, rich lives because it was the result of a clean and healthy lifestyle. However, many of their young continue to be born tainted and many of their children are starting to live shorter and shorter lifespans. There have been a few rumors of dragons from neighboring territories catching glimpses of the extinct dragons near their borders. It’s very possible that Drifters are looking to other territories to save their kind.
