History
Esper fretted over this child, day in and day out. Her children were strong. Strong warriors of the Earthshaker. Yet this one had hatched almost silently, this one seemed disoriented. Esper's joy over her new child quickly flickered into concern, watching as her little one barely gave her any response from the start. As the clan's head healer, she knew. It became clear quickly that her child simply didn't hear her. Grau had been born deaf, with weak vocal cords. Grau would never be able to speak in the same melodic tones of other coatls, nor hear the intent in the voices of them. For a time, dread grasped at her chest. An old friend of her clan, however, caught wind of Esper's troubles. Ginger, as the tundra was known, would soon arrive to the clan nursery to provide aid. Hard of hearing, Ginger had learned to read lips and speak in wing and tail signals. He quickly took Grau under his wing as an apprentice, teaching the young coatl the earth flight's history from both dragon and beastclan perspectives alongside providing means for Grau to communicate. After a time, Grau embarked on a journey across the Shattered Plain, hoping to meditate upon a purpose after all his studies. He would return three weeks later, returning to announce both his transition to a man and his wish to work as a historian for his clan. Tragedy, however, would strike his clan soon. Grau's older siblings, Schwarz and Weiss, had been traveling criminals, peddling snake oil across Dragonhome. One day, however, their caravan didn't return. Instead, a traveling merchant had found the bodies, which were eventually connected to Esper's family. Even though Grau hadn't seen his siblings much over the years, their deaths affected him deeply, possibly because of his wish that he'd gotten to know them better. Unable to bear the weight of this grief alongside his mother's, Grau jumped at the opportunity to work away from the clan's current home, and left for the shadow flight's border. Nowadays, Grau lives in the city of Boreas on the border of the earth and shadow flights, alongside his mentor and affiliates. His current project is a record of the activities of veilspun in the city for the past few centuries, something that has led to him digging through webs of family trees and piles of artifacts. On occasion, the veilspun will warn Grau he may be digging too deep...

Relationships
Brother mine. Rosa is Grau's younger brother, currently standing accused for the death of their elder siblings Schwarz and Weiss. Whether or not Rosa truly did this is unknown; what is known is that Rosa has long despised his siblings for their pale feathers, and that his primal eyes led him to believe that the Earthshaker had chosen him for some higher calling. Grau has his suspicions, of course, but a part of him is desperate to hear that Rosa is innocent this time. Still feeling guilty over not getting to know his wind-born siblings better, Grau believes this desire comes out of wanting a sibling relationship at all. Time will tell how Grau's grace towards his brother serves them both.Mother dearest. Grau left home in part because the grief of his mother, Esper, was too strong. While he couldn't hear her wailing for her lost children, he felt the vibrations in the air, the way it tore at her chest and snaked its way around her throat to choke her. Though she has been supportive of Grau over the years, Grau will admit she is a bit smothering, having worried far more over Grau's well-being than she had with any children before. Though Grau wants to love his mother, the freedom he was given under the wings of Ginger and his mate, Breeze, had left their relationship strained before. He didn't just leave because of her grief. He left because she would have held him down if he stayed.
I'm sorry... Esper's beloved wife and Grau's second mother, Holly helps rein in Esper's more smothering tendencies, gently reminding her that her children must learn to spread their wings. Holly helped harbor her son's more creative side, encouraging his interests in writing and history so he could truly blossom before he left under Ginger's wing. Despite this, it's clear the loss of her other children, as well as the suspicions that Rosa was responsible, weigh on her heavily. Holly's current artistic pursuits frequently involve grief and reflect her inability to move on, and Grau, when he visits, cannot help but be stricken with guilt for leaving her when he returns home.
Auntie. Ginger's interpreter and another dragon that Grau considers a familial figure, particularly given her close relationship with Holly. As he learned to communicate in gestures and sign, Grau quickly developed a signal to refer to Breeze as "auntie," something she takes in stride. Breeze's playful, laid-back nature and creativity rubbed off quickly on the young coatl, as evidenced by some of the glyphs and diagrams in his notebooks.
Thank you, master. Being hard of hearing himself, Ginger quickly took it upon himself to teach Grau to communicate. During this, Grau took interest in Ginger's peacekeeping work, and eventually would join Ginger in the Boreas-based Thistlethorn Embassy. Ginger was quick to teach him about the history between dragons and beastclans, alliances and conflicts across the vast tapestry that is Sornieth. In addition, Ginger and Breeze were the first dragons to know Grau as a man, something that, in Grau's eyes, truly reflects his trust in the two.
