Biography

Renegade
The Pirate

It must have been the middle of the night when Tangerine woke to a violent scraping sound just above him. He peered over at Flash; the thief was still fast asleep, hood pulled down over her eyes. He thought about waking her, trying to decide whether or not she'd just hit him and go back to sleep. The scraping sound did not stop; he suddenly felt queasy as he realized the ship was moving. One porthole was visible amongst all the barrels, and he could clearly see it was still dark; why had they set off now? He decided that must be enough to justify waking his friend. He reached over and gently nudged her shoulder; when that didn't work, he tried again, and again, until he was grabbing both her shoulders and shaking her violently. Her eyes snapped open, and a claw shot out from her cloak and grabbed him around the throat. Tangerine thought for a moment she might really kill him before she relaxed her grip.

"Don't DO that!" She growled, trying to keep quiet. "What's wrong with you?!"

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry. It's just that sound! Do you hear that? And the boat," He paused and swallowed, trying not to let the shifting ship turn his stomach. "We're moving, can't you feel that?"

"If you get seasick I'm throwing you overboard," she said flatly, then glanced up at the ceiling where the sound was coming from. Tangerine thought it sounded as though a great beast was trying to claw through the deck and come down on top of them. "It's just scrubbing. They're cleaning the deck."

"Oh," said Tangerine.

Flash rolled her eyes. "If there's nothing else, I'm going back to sleep. Don't wake me unless someone's pointing a sword at me," She promptly rolled over, pulling her hood back down over her eyes. Tangerine sat for a moment, thinking.

"Why are they cleaning the deck in the middle of the night?"

Flash sat up and met Tangerine's eyes. Neither said anything, but they both looked up at the ceiling again.

"Why don't I...go take a look," She said finally. "They won't see me, I promise. I'll just look." Tangerine nodded quickly, and Flash slipped between the barrels and up the ladder, lifting the trap door just enough for her to see out. Tangerine couldn't help himself; he had to see too. He motioned to his Seeing Stone to wait, and gingerly crawled up the ladder, squeezing in beside Flash to peer out onto the deck. He slapped a claw over his mouth to stifle his gasp.

There were sailors scrubbing the deck, alright; and the moonlight that shone down on them from between the ash clouds illuminated their terrible forms. They were little more than skeletons with rotting flesh hanging from their bones, draped in the torn rags of what once must have been sailor's clothes. A few of them were glowing with an eerie, unnatural light. At the helm, a Mirror stood wearing a tricorne hat, barking orders at the crew interlaced with cruel insults and disturbing threats. Above her, a black flag bearing a white skull flew. Tangerine noticed that Flash had already scrambled back down the ladder, and he followed. She was panting.

"What are they?!" Her voice was a barely-contained whisper. "Zombie pirates?! Tangerine, what is going on out there?!" Tangerine shut his eyes tight, trying to think.

"I think, um, well, they're, hm. Well," He muttered. Flash cursed under her breath. "I've seen something like this before. Back in the Temper," He glanced back up at the trap door. "Sometimes creatures like that appear in the Witherlands. No one's sure why," He paused for a moment. "But how would they get all the way out here? And why would they take a ship? And how can they talk? I've never heard of undead being able to talk." Flash's eyes were as wide as saucers.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE!?" She immediately slapped her claws over her mouth, and the scrubbing above deck stopped. Tangerine felt as though his heart had stopped, too. Stomping boots above them. The trapdoor opening. Three glowing red eyes staring down at them; the Mirror in the tricorne, one eye covered, the flesh on her face rotted away making her appear to have a perpetual, too-wide grin.

"Ssssstowaways!" She laughed, a grating sound that made Tangerine wince. "Journey, haul 'em up!" As soon as it was said, a Nocturne swooped down and grabbed the pair with surprising strength. Her grip felt as cold as ice on Tangerine's scales.

The two were thrown onto the deck like sacks, and Tangerine groaned. Flash sounded like she was hyperventilating. The Mirror, clearly the captain, brandished a deadly-looking cutlass as she eyed the two stowaways.

"Ssssso," Her voice made Tangerine feel as though he had sand in his teeth, and her eyes seemed to pierce through him as well as that sword could. "What do a couple o' good-for-nothin' stowaways be doin' on me ship?"

"We just needed passage," Flash blurted out. "Out of the Smoldering City. We wouldn't have caused any trouble." Her voice shrank as the Captain's gaze rested on her.

"No trouble? Aye, I believe ye," For a moment, she sounded understanding. "But I'll not be toleratin' stowaways on me ship. Not especially now that you've seen us for what we are," What was left of the skin on her face pulled back as though she meant to grin. "THROW 'EM OFF!"

The tough Nocturne grabbed them again, and began to drag them to the side. Tangerine could hear Flash's claws trying to dig into the wood. He suddenly remembered that Boggy and his Seeing Stone were still below deck. He wondered what pirates did to stray frogs.

"STOP!" The Captain shouted. Tangerine looked up in surprise. Flash sounded as though she was hyperventilating. The Captain walked with a slow limp, and Tangerine wondered if she really did come out of the Witherlands. She grabbed a piece of parchment lying on the deck; Tangerine shoved a hand in his pocket and found it empty.

The map!

The Captain examined it for a moment, then came even closer to Tangerine, narrowing her glowing eyes. He could smell the stench of undeath on her.

"Wherever did ye find a thing like this?"
