Biography

Born of plague and rot, the city was burning when they fled, death tainting the smoke so it filled the lungs and never left. He was one of many who caught death by the tail, chasing it with a fierce will to survive. But his parents were not so lucky. He was left to wander, crying out the names of mother and father with tears streaking through the ash on his cheeks.

He found a forge for the night, curling up in front of the fire with exhaustion dulling every instinct that would demand hiding, demand flight. When he woke, it was night again, and it was to the sound of hissing water as glowing metal was shoved inside a bucket to cool. A burly woman with one eye red, one eye orange, did not smile so much as nod gruffly at the child. She did not turn him away. So it was Aodh stayed, not so much adopted as begrudgingly allowed to, learning quietly and quickly the chores he could do to earn his keep. First, he swept shavings, then added coal and wood, then refilled water - on and on, he was careful never to be underfoot and always useful.

The blacksmith was deaf, he learned that too, and with his softspoken voice would write orders on tablets, never acknowledging the woman's disability. Rather, he learned more tricks, developing their own sign language cobbled together with a need to be discrete but understood. He grew older, and the blacksmith began to teach him how to stoke the fire properly, how to heat the metal till it was too bright to look at directly. He grew skilled in as many areas as the blacksmith, though only rudimentary without true experience. He learned others too, sewing, leathermaking, anything that would be useful for a forge should he only be an apprentice.

He grew old enough that the woman who had become like his mother urged him to leave, to find better work than a town beset by plague. The blacksmith had tears in her eyes as Aodh waved goodbye, setting out with fire in his heart and an uncertain future to find a new home to work with quiet endurance.
--
Aodh found Haven by pure chance; he had never heard of the settlement, but the clean pathways and general peace in the middle of a wasteland of plague gave him hope for something more than what he’d been walking through for weeks. The Knight was still awake when he arrived, though the Prophet had already begun her slumber. Remir listened to Aodh's tale with a sympathetic ear, expressing his sympathy for the loss of his parents so young. Haven could use a blacksmith, Remir ventured, if he chose to stay. The idea grew on Aodh as he rested there, meeting the various residents of the settlement and discovering their need for a set of claws at the forge in the wake of their previous smith being called to serve the Plaguebringer.

This, too, was something Aodh was wary of. The residents of Haven revered the Plaguebringer far more literally than so many he had encountered, even to the point of training their children expressly to send to her service. Such devotion was something he was unfamiliar with, until he spoke with one of Haven's oldest over a meal.

“The Plaguebringer gives Haven its ability to be just that,” Solvi had said, spearing a particularly juicy grub on one talon. “So long as her call is answered when it comes, so long as we continue to work in her name, she protects us. With the Knight and the Prophet both in hibernation, that's something we need more than ever.”

Aodh understood this. Haven lived not in fear of the Plaguebringer, but in harmony with her. And that was something he could do, too.
