Isolda The Architect |
You aren't exactly sure how, but you have now managed to stumble upon one of the strangest of rooms. It seemed to have once been a wide open room, but now is cluttered with large desks, flickering lamps, and an inordinate amount of paper. Huge sheets half rolled up, scribbled designs of... something partially visible, or perhaps those were calculations? It was hard to tell; the entire room was covered in a thin layer of ice. Suddenly, a deep blue spiral dropped from the ceiling, her eyes frosting the scales around them. "Oh dear... oh dear oh dear oh dear... I hope I didn't break anything? It can be difficult to see in low light. Oh, yes, I am Isolda! Resident architect and technically blind but not really, its a long story. Go talk to Midnight for that."
Author's note: don't talk to Midnight, just keep reading. My train of thought will come next, I don't need you blabbering in my ear asking about the very thing I'm writing.
~Midnight |
Origins
From the very moment she was born, it was obvious that Isolda was not the typical spiral. For one thing, here eyes were encrusted with ice, small snowflakes flaking off and falling in an unusually stunning way. For another, she was not born a she, but was named Irathe at birth and given the pronouns "he/him". Irathe would venture into the snowy mountains around him with ease, following the other hatchlings an participating in dares. His unusual eyes didn't seem to have an effect on his vision, though he was spectacularly horrendous at hunting. However, when a snow squall forced his clan into the depths of a stone cave for shelter, he was thoroughly blinded, even with firelight. It was then discovered that his eyes could only see refracted light, such as the light striking the snowy surfaces outside. This fact devastated Irathe, and for quite awhile he hid himself away from his clanmates, refusing to come to terms with the fact that he could hardly see them not because they blended in so well, but because they did not. He was blind, and it hurt. Eventually, a young fae became fed up with his sulking, pulling Irathe out of his den and to the rest of his squad. They held an intervention, which was so monumentally ridiculous that Irathe couldn't help the laugh that escaped him. Deciding that, if he was to turn a new leaf like they suggested, he should come clean to his friends. He was not a he, but rather a she. This was the first moment Isolda took up her new name and pronouns. From there, she only grew more bold. It was not fixed all at once, she would still never see her friends like she wanted to, but through great effort they figured out ways to work around such things. She began to learn to build, using the sharp edges she could see in the snow to create deadly looking spires of ice. When all of her friends began to move away, Isolda decided that perhaps it was time for her to find a new home as well. She knew her skills as an architect would be useful in the Lightning Domain, where they were constantly in need of builders for new lightning farms. She contacted the Galestorm Flyers, arriving only a few days later with nothing but the scales on her back. At first, she was quite shy of the other dragons, trying to figure out how to tell them she didn't want to be called "he" (as they only could see her biological gender) while not overstepping her boundaries. The chance came when Sinora visited her, wanting to discuss another lightning farm the electricians were considering building. Sinora, in her ever kind nature, told the rest of the clan about Isolda; both her feminine gender and her troublesome sight. The next surprise was Serezha, who came to Isolda with a bottle of odd looking ink and iridescent paper. It had taken lots of work, but he had come up with an enchantment that created paper and ink Isolda could see, their surfaces refracting enough light for her eyes. It was clear then that she had made the right decision, even if the paper had suspicious red spots in the corner. |
Personality
Isolda is first and foremost a shy dragon, prefering to hide in her lair and work on various plans when guests are over. For the most part she will stay tucked away and silent, at most venturing out to speak with one of the electricians if absolutely necessary. If, for some odd reason, Isolda is caught off guard and forced into socializing, she will start babbling her sentences rather quickly, repeating herself far too often. However, if one puts the time and effort into befriending the quirky spiral, one will discover she tends to be a rather wise soul. Isolda tries her best to be a shoulder to cry on, though she isn't the best with physical affection and would rather comfort others with her words. She excels at reflecting upon difficult situations in life, often arriving at the silver lining within the storm. She does her best to draw upon her own experiences to combat other's problems as well. At the moment, Isolda has little interest in romance though perhaps one day she will find a nice dragon or dragoness to settle down with. For the time being, she focuses upon her job, throwing herself into her work in order to make her keep with the Galestorm Flyers.
