Beacon padded across the slick substrate of the Wandering Contagion, humming a light melody as he went. He kept his wings tucked loosely against his sides, bobbing his head a bit in rhythm to his own tune. The pearlcatcher pranced up to the ledge of their territory that bled into the wind territory and the small island that he shared with his boyfriend. With a few flaps of his wings, he was airborne. It was a remarkably short flight to reach the island’s surface and far more pleasant than traversing the underground tunnels.
“Reverie!” He called out upon his landing. The tiny isle was the closest thing to a sanctuary the wildclaw had, so truth be told, he rarely left. Rarely left his nest at all, if Beacon were to be honest with himself.
Today, however, was a morning Beacon had been looking forward to for weeks. Typically his time spent with Reverie was a day in the dreamscape or, if the wildclaw was feeling especially courageous, they’d sit on their ledge overlooking the territory and have dinner together. Beacon cherished those rare moments, but last moon, he’d been able to convince Reverie to join him for a real date. One in the mainland lair, just on the border of arcane, so they could get a nice view of the morning in the Starwood Strand as the sun caught the crystal leaves and turned them diverse shades of pink, blue, and purple.
“Reverie!” He called again, borderline singsong, trotting into their lair. No surprise, the wildclaw was curled up in the nest of pillows and blankets he’d brought into the living area. There was a content smile on his face while he pressed his snout into the soft pillow beneath his head.
Beacon’s shoulders fell as the corners of his mouth did, but it was only for a brief moment of disappointment. Perhaps he just needed to give Reverie a nudge. He used his own snout to press lightly against Reverie’s cheek. “Reverie?”
No response. Beacon tried again to no avail.
“Come on, come home,” he said in a soft tone of voice. The pearlcatcher let his snout press lightly against Beacon’s cheek, barely more than a moment to nuzzle him. “We have that date this morning, remember?”
Reverie flinched a little despite his slumber and used his wing to briefly cover his face. Beacon let himself sigh sharply in disappointment. Perhaps it was the fact that Reverie had been spending more and more time in the dreamscape. Perhaps it was how tired Beacon was from trying to dedicate his time both to the one he loved and the friends he’d made within the clan. Perhaps it was that gnawing little voice in the back of his mind that was resentful of the fact that Reverie could actively choose a dream world over him. No matter the reason, Beacon decided to give up.
Dipping his head, the pearlcatcher turned back the way he’d come, heading back to the main entrance of the lair. The feeling of his talons in the soil was a small comfort- cool and loamy to the touch- but not enough to mask the disappointment and frustration he felt with the situation. Not with Reverie. Not really. The wildclaw had already given so much to join him here. He couldn’t find it in himself to be angry.
“Beacon? What’s wrong?” A voice addressed him curiously, full of genuine concern. When the pearlcatcher looked up, he found himself snout to snout with the green and yellow obelisk who smelled strongly of sweet spring blossoms. An oddity in the Scarred Wasteland, for sure. The scent of decay so often permeated the air that anything sweet stood out instantly.
“Oh, I’m sorry, Ginko,” he was primarily apologizing for his lack of attentiveness as he walked. He’d nearly collide with her. “I’m fine. Really.”
“Where is Reverie? I thought the two of you were spending the morning together?”
And there it was again. The pearlcatcher’s ears fell flat, pinned back against his head to illustrate his frustration and hurt. “So did I.”
His friend gently laid a wing over his back- a gesture of comfort- as she guided him to sit beside her in the crook of the branches belonging to a petrified tree. Her voice was kind but cautious when she spoke. “Beacon, talk to me. What happened?”
He shook his head. Not because he didn’t want to tell her, only because it was difficult to find the words. Hard to explain that he could hardly blame Reverie for choosing his beautiful dreamscape over the Scarred Wasteland and its hectic daily routine. “It’s nothing. He was just in the dreamscape, that’s all. I didn’t want to bring him back for something he really didn’t want to do anyway.”
While Ginko held a certain sympathy for Reverie, for his anxiety and fears regarding the overwhelming hustle and bustle of the clan, she also held an understanding for what Beacon was going through during all of it. How hard it must be for him to see his boyfriend choose a fantasy over the reality they could spend together. “That was incredibly selfless of you. I’m sure when he wakes, Reverie will be grateful… but what about you?”
“What about me?” Spiteful wasn’t quite the right word to use for this tone. Resentful, maybe?
“It’s wonderful that you respect Reverie’s sacrifices in coming here with you. But. You’re making sacrifices too, Beacon. Please don’t forget that,” Ginko gave his shoulder a light push, and with a shake of her maned head, padded off in the direction of the food stores to collect something for breakfast. Beacon watched her go, conflict in his crimson eyes.
Eventually, he turned and traveled back to the isle, where he laid down beside his slumbering partner, and laid his head on Reverie’s shoulder as he stepped into the dreamscape in an attempt to coax him back to the physical world. Whether it was to be successful or not, Beacon wasn’t yet sure. But he knew one thing. Fantasy or reality, both were far less fulfilling without Reverie by his side. He only hoped that one day, Reverie might admit to sharing that sentiment.
