Doesn't exist, just like the boogieman.

  • Art critics and enthusiasts from all over Sornieth crowded together, waiting for the final masterpiece to be revealed. When the cover was pulled away, they stared for a moment, and then they began to applaud: “Such vibrant colors, and how strong your strokes are, how sure! You have a gift for the abstract as well!” The artist was keen enough to graciously accept the praise. She looked at her other works, depictions of wildflowers and seascapes, and then back at that canvas of whirling, brilliant splashes. She worried because she couldn’t recall making it. She wasn’t sure she could do it again.
  • Gathering was something the clan did every day. They trod the same paths, went past the same landmarks. But the insect-catcher kept walking, walking, until the path faded out from beneath her. Until the stars were the only lights to see by. Then she stopped, shivering uncertainly in the middle of the emptiness. The gatherers’ paths had gone long ago, and now, so did the thoughts that had pulled her here.
  • He always took his coffee black. The kitchen maid was surprised when he requested sugar from her instead. “Thank you, my dear,” he muttered, and then he dropped a spoonful into the drink. And then another, and another. Faster and faster and faster, till a small island of sugar poked up from the coffee sea. His clanmates clustered around, first amused, then concerned. “Old Randall’s mind is slipping,” a Guardian rumbled, and the sound seemed to jolt him to his senses. He sat there, blinking at the sugar-strewn table, and muttered, “I suppose I just wanted to taste it.”
  • It was one of the shiniest pieces of equipment to come out of the Shifting Expanse, but in minutes it had been reduced to scrap. The administrator couldn’t explain why he’d done it. “It was a simple glitch,” he protested, but the pieces of metal glittering around his feet said that he’d felt otherwise. Even when questioned by his superiors, he kept admitting he didn’t know. Until later at the end, when it was time to go home, he turned to one of them and whispered, “I wanted to know the feeling of destroying it for once.”
  • “You should take care of your familiars,” her parents said, and that was what she did. She cradled the Sweetpuff, forming a nest for it with her claws. First a refuge...and then a cage. “Stop,” she told herself, but the bars kept closing in. Her claws. “Stop...stop...stop,” until she was left with a mess, elders screaming around her, and feathers drifting onto her feet. She felt someone lift her chin, so she raised her head. But there was no one there, and the elders were backing away now. She stared at them. It whispered "Sorry, I didn't know. I didn't know that would happen." And she was repeating it, word from word.

"Sorry, I didn't know. I didn't know that would happen. Please. I'm sorry."
