Blackpearl #6223
Dr. Beatrice Tinsley (1941-1981) was a British-born, New Zealand raised cosmologist who's research is critical to our understanding of the formation, evolution, and death of galaxies. The mathematical models that she developed in her lifetime - which were the first computer models ever made in the field of astronomy - led to the modern understanding of protogalaxies and continue to be used as a basis for many modern cosmic models. She obtained her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, where she was the only woman in her department, culminating in a thesis focused on the evolution of galaxies. Though her groundbreaking research was recognised throughout the astronomy community, she had difficulty obtaining a permanent academic position. She finally obtained one in 1974 from Yale, where she became the first female professor of astronomy (1978). She continued to research and publish papers until her death in 1981, the last one being submitted just ten days before she passed away.
