The female Guardian stared deep into the reptilian eyes in front of her, as if searching for a long-forgotten truth.

The crocodile stared back, a look of utter fear in its eyes, hoping that its end would come quickly.

Disappointed by what she saw, the dragon released the scaly reptile from her talons and watched it swim frantically away through the tall grasses of the marsh until it disappeared underwater.

Kelpie, so named for her affinity for swamps like the mythical creature of the same name, was on yet another of her seemingly pointless quests. She believed that the swamps in her clan territory were the home of an ancient spirit, one that, if captured, would be obligated to reveal to her the secrets of the swamp itself and would grant her power over it. Not that Kelpie really wanted to wield any special power over anything, but something about the idea of power appealed to her. As things stood now, Kelpie felt rather insignificant. She was pretty, sure, but no one would ever go so far as to call her beautiful, stunning. She was intelligent, but she was no genius. She could hunt and fight, but not well enough to provide for her clan or play a significant role in it. All in all, she often felt worthless, useless. And she was tired of feeling that way.

So, here she was, lying submerged in the murky waters of the swamp, camouflaged amongst the reeds, waiting for a swamp spirit which she wasn’t sure even existed to show its face and make her something more than what she had always been. The day had turned hot and the sun beat down on her back. Mosquitos buzzed ceaselessly around her face, and she could feel more and more leeches attaching themselves to her body even as she remained as motionless as she could. The hours ticked by, but still no sign of any mystical swamp spirit...

At some point, despite her discomfort and frustration, Kelpie drifted into a dream-filled sleep. In her dream, she was walking through the swamp, up to her shoulders in muddy water. She was walking towards a large cypress tree in the center of the swamp, its roots radiating out in all directions from its trunk, covering almost the entirety of the swamp. Her path to the base of the tree remained clear of roots, however, and Kelpie strode fluidly forward. As she neared the tree, Kelpie could make out the silhouette of something sitting at its base, but it was too dark for her eyes to discern anything more. Eventually, she stepped just beneath the cypress tree’s massive, overarching canopy. As if some extraordinary force suddenly seized her, Kelpie found that she could not move a muscle. She looked down at her immobile legs, strangely unalarmed at her current predicament. Something in the back of her mind told her that the creature in front of her was the source of her immobility, and she lifted her gaze to the silhouette at the base of the tree. An electric jolt ran through her entire body. The creature in front of her remained shrouded in shadows, but at the center of this shadow had appeared two glowing green eyes. And they were staring directly at her.

The female Guardian stared deep into the reptilian eyes in front of her, as if searching for a long-forgotten truth.

Kelpie woke from her dream with a start, her heart racing. Her thoughts were muddled like the turbid water below her. The dream had felt so real… who did those eyes belong to? As Kelpie became fully awake, she realized with another jolt of adrenaline that she was not alone. Her eyes snapped up, wide open, and she found herself staring into a second pair of eyes. Green, glowing orbs that seemed to peer past Kelpie’s mind and into her soul. But now, in the light of the setting sun, Kelpie could make out the shape of the creature in front of her. It was a kelpie, the mythical swamp creature that Kelpie herself had been named after, although this kelpie somehow felt much more real, and much, much more powerful. Long strands of aquatic vegetation were twisted in her mane and her equine body seemed to be made of from the waters of the swamp itself. Just as in her dream, Kelpie found that she was frozen to the spot, incapable of movement.

The two creatures stood in the swamp, staring into each other’s eyes, and the longer she stood there, the more Kelpie became convinced that she did not deserve the power of the swamp spirit. She was nothing, insignificant, and utterly arrogant for thinking she deserved to know the sacred secrets of the immortal protector of this swamp. She began to regret ever coming here, she felt unworthy to even be standing in such a sacred place, and more than anything, she felt more alone than she ever had before. Her remorsefulness and loneliness washed over in powerful waves, until she realized that she was weeping, silent tears streaming down her cheeks while she continued to stare into the impenetrable eyes of the spirit in front of her. At the sight of her tears, the kelpie closed her eyes and leaned forward, until her forehead rested against the Guardian’s in front of her. As if it were a physical force, Kelpie felt a sensation of utter peace come over her, soothing her fears. Her desolation had vanished, and she was overcome by the knowledge that she was not alone. She was never alone. In a way, Kelpie felt powerful. She became sure of herself for the first time in her life, realizing that she was who she was. Nothing more, nothing less. And she was perfect that way.

Kelpie and the spirit stood together for a long time in the swamp, their foreheads pressed together in silent communication. When the sun finally dipped below the horizon, the spirit vanished, as if it had never been there at all. But Kelpie knew that it had, and she was forever changed because of it. When she eventually returned to her clan that evening, Kelpie felt empowered, peaceful, content, ready to face the world with a new set of eyes.

But more than anything, Kelpie knew she was not alone.
