Proserpina is named after the Roman goddess of the Underworld. Her mother, Ceres, was the goddess of grain and fertility. When Ceres denied Pluto, the god of the Underworld, the marriage to Proserpina, he forcibly abducted the young goddess. In her grief, Ceres made all the plants on Earth wilt and die, and soon Jupiter was forced to help Ceres and Pluto come to an agreement. From then on, Proserpina lives with her mother for half of each year, and the plants and trees flourish and bloom; when she descends into the Underworld though, the world becomes a darker, solemn place: fruit ripen and fall, the flora withers, and the cold winds bring the snowy blanket, under which the world waits for her return.
