written by zafer Life was quiet for the guardian in his bog. He loved the warm mud under his claws and the soft light filtering through the branches. Most of his days were spent silently shifting through the water and nursing the flowers to bloom. It was quiet, but nice. Peaceful. Something he hadn't had for decades. Then the skydancer tore through the canopy and disturbed his calm waters. She was torn, matted, and broken. But she was fighting. Even her silent stares felt like a challenge. He was…interested, if not a little scared. He didn’t like new things. New things were dangerous. They threatened his careful peace, his acceptance of fate. But soon, the stories started to come from the skydancer. She-Kimi-was abandoned by her mother. Left with nothing but anger, she desired revenge but the glades did not like anyone who would harm its inhabitants. Seeking her mother had brought nothing but failure and hurt. Nelumbo recoiled at the tale, shocked at how similar their pain was. He too was trapped by the past out of his control. Cursed to wander the glades and to never leave because of crimes not his own. It wasn’t an unbearable pain, but it was lonely. And Kimi, was a break. A welcome one, after a while. He started to try to help her as much as possible. He told her of all the herbs he knew and how to avoid certain dangers. Everything he thought of, he spoke of. He had forgotten his kind of warmth. Surprisingly, he was not the first to suggest traveling together. It was Kimi who had first offered to help him get some help to break the curse. She said she knew a couple of dragons with talents beyond the normal. If they wouldn’t help, well, she would convince them. If they couldn’t, she promised she would find a way. They helped each other. Both hurt but both fighting. Nelumbo, or Bo for Kimi, slowly became hopeful as the two of them traveled and spoke more. The trips back to the glade were always rough as he felt himself slipping away but he never did with the skydancer standing next to him. For the quiet moments resting side-by-side or for the tears after fight, he was forever grateful to have met Kimi and to start healing. |
