An egg in a nest like any other. The parents, veterans at this by now, still smile at their clutch as if it was the very first one. Three beautiful babies in three glorious eggs, protectively wrapped by layers of secure, strong vines. Any day now, they will hatch. Vague shapes dance within, carefree. With meticulous slowness, four days pass. It becomes time to welcome them into the world. The first one breaks out extraordinarily quickly, a beautiful brown like her mother, her soft green eyes shining. It doesn't take long to see that she will be a handful. Shortly after, the second begins to emerge, also brown, but darker and richer. Her wings are touched with fire. The parents, thrilled, wait for their final baby to hatch. They sit patiently, predicting this hatchling to be slow and cautious. They continue to wait, watching within for a sign. It becomes mid afternoon. Their egg makes no movement, and the shape that stirred within has gone still. With a dawning sadness, they stand vigil, watching the rest of the day pass by softly. They have never had an egg not hatch before, even after so many clutches had been laid. This couldn't be right. A thought passes between them with just a look, brightening their eyes and allowing small smiles to form. The small creature within is simply sleeping, just as they should be. Tomorrow, they will check their nest to see the brightest, best hatchling they've ever laid, happy and hungry. With this in their minds, they sleep.

Morning dawns, and both parents flit to their nest as fast as they can, hoping to see only an eggshell, a beautiful baby alongside it. Inside the nest stands a single egg. They don't understand. Tomorrow, they will need to have an important conversation. They go about their day as usual, now not even bothering to glance at their mistake. Filled with shame, they keep their heads down, and tell their children that it was merely a clutch of two. It's better that way. The night goes by peacefully, the parents standing protective watch over their hatchlings, the mother keeping a special eye out for another tiny frame bounding into the den at last. None of those inside realize the gentle changes being made inside the heavy shell of the final hatchling's home, the green energy that keeps the small shape alive pulsing once more through and around it, giving off a gentle glow.
