Zelk's original clan trained him as a spy and sent him to locate and infiltrate the supposed village that was hidden within the Starwood Stand. They believed the village could only have formed within the dangerous forest with the help of powerful magics and artifacts, and they wanted them.

However, Zelk became lost in the forest and despaired, having never fully believed in his mission. Delirious and exhausted he did finally stumble into the village, where he was warmly welcomed. He attempted to resume his mission, but the genuine friendliness of the inhabitants caused guilt to eat away at him, and eventually he broke down and admitted his mission to the village leaders. But the forest had already told Shannara the truth about him before he even set foot in the valley, and she had welcomed him anyway.

Zelk now lives in the village training to be a guard, delighting in how very different it is to his previous home, and dreading the day his old clan decides he has been away on his 'mission' long enough.
